Microsoft will be offering Windows 10 for free to users of Win7 and 8, but you'll have to upgrade within one year. I just hope win10 is better than Win8.

I needed a new laptop. Microsoft made my decision easy and I bought a Mac.

My son has been using 10 for a few months and finds it faster with less problems. I have both 7 and 8.1 on my machine I use 8.1 most of the time.

I wonder if the older processors for the "old" Win-7 PCs will work well enough. My desktop is about 3 years old.

A computer that runs Windows 7 well, will be more stable and a bit faster on 10. My current Atom processor, which was the one used in most NETBOOKS, is running faster on the Windows 10 I have been running than it did on Windows 7 32 bit Home.

The minimum requirements (which are published on internet at Microsoft) are very low indeed. 1 Gh processor and 2 Gb RAM for 64 bit. I have 1.8 Gh and 4 Gb RAM and it runs along nicely. I don't do heavy PP however. No Adobe products in this house. Can't deal with Adobe's Catalog based Organizer system. Too funky.

The Windows 10 posted two days ago available free does involve joining the Windows Insider program (anybody can) and is very laden with warnings about it being trial, and not being reversible, Meaning you may lose the Factory Restore partition of your computer. (may being operative)

So, it's available, it's already free, it's on trial. I have been using it since the second preview build. Now on the most recent (two days ago).

Have had no problems, no software it won't run, and all my equipment works.

I did the same. Microsoft made my decision easy as well. I bought a one year old Toshiba laptop refurb from ToshibaDirect and put Windows 10 on it.....

For less money, I suspect $400.???

Being on a fixed income, Apple prices are out of my budget range, (considering other interests and hobbies), and I needed the extra performance. 16 gigabytes of RAM.

one example Toshiba Refurb

I stopped using Windows on my main computer about 9 or 10 years ago. The wife has windows 7 on hers just to play cards and read her news. I use linux and have NEVER had a problem. 99% of everything I do is on my Linux machine, the other 1% is ocassionally repairing the wifes.

Until it's proven, I'll stay with 7 Pro...

the joke is that win 8.1 actually is win 8 + 1 = 9 and Jerry is correct. There will be no 9 ! The estimated release date of late 2015 translates to "Christmas buying season".

Thanks for that. I put an SSD in my new Dell yesterday. Now I have to install all the programs. I'll get that Classic Shell.

It's pretty straightforward. Just make sure to DL from classicshell.net web site. I made a mistake in not looking closely at the download site and got a load of crapware... 207 items to be exact.

My good friend... MalwareBytes from Malwarebytes.org cleaned it all up in about 20 minutes. Stupid mistake... I know better. Look twice at the download sites and ALWAYS DL from publisher site.

I have used the Classic Shell menu replacement free in a number of my Windows Classes at the college. I have a handout on install and configuration to boot to the Desktop directly and include the new menu, either to look like XP, or like Vista/Win7.

PM me if you want the handout emailed. I also have the clarity on the download to start out the handout.

When they release it, you'll find all the 411 you could hope for.
