Windows operating systems are basically a rolling development of the original platform dating back to XP and 2000. Although the interface changes, and to make the os frustrating all the programs are shuffled into new directories, the basics are exactly the same. The networking, the file management, the disk management, and we understand Windows 10 will be following the same pattern.
The reason MS is giving away the system is to date less than 10% of users have taken up Windows 8 in it's various incarnations. So the plan is to give 10 away on a try before you buy basis. However as it does not address the fundamental changes needed to fix the basically slow and occasionally very unreliable platform the general consensus at the moment seems to be to continue with Windows 7 and wait for the promised merging of the desktop and server operating systems potentially due in 2016.
Microsoft's problem is that they need to deal with the core technology, not keep adding pretty front ends to the same dated software. However as most of the people that developed that are long since retired the difficulty is in finding someone who can do this.

Thanks for that info Dave, I still run XP on both my laptops are realize the need to upgrade soon as XP is no longer supported, already decided against Win 8 and thought Win 7 pro would be the way to go, but may now hang back for another 12 months to see what arrives

Of all the platforms we have used XP came nearest to being what we thought ideal - then Windows 7. Windows 8 is a shambles, and Vista was simply unusable. Not sure having automatic updates from MS is actually a benefit to most XP users, a good anti virus / malware program and XP offers a platform that can still be used with confidence, or as much confidence as any of the frequently hacked MS operating systems.
We are staying on Win7 until we see the post Win10 offering; all the advice we are getting is that Win10 is nothing really new, though this may change.
Best of luck... wish more of the apps we need to use ran on Linux. At least that works!

Microsoft will be offering Windows 10 for free to users of Win7 and 8, but you'll have to upgrade within one year. I just hope win10 is better than Win8.
Hi Jerry. I've been a 'tester' of Windows 10 for about three months now and it appears to be very solid, although there are not many (drastic) changes from Windows 8.1. Of course the 'test model' is beta and they continue to improve/change things as testers report any problems or complaints. MS was quick to reply (and correct) a small point that I mentioned to them. I've found most 'bashers' of Windows 8 are only repeating what they've read, OR didn't really get deeply into what its capabilities were. Of course, the equipment they use it on has quite a bearing on how 'good' or 'bad' it may seem too. I've had excellent results with 8.1 - no complaints.

I"ve had zero problems with windows 8...........
but then again I have a very powerful HP desk top.....
perhaps, that makes the difference?
Biggest problem I've had since upgrading to 8.1 is the system does not like the touchpad, works with mouse fine, use touchpad and a lot of interference with the metro screen stuff pops up, of course my main computer is on Win 7, Bob.

I'd really consider switching to Linux if PSP could run on it, I just can't get comfortable with GIMP, I know it's good and I could learn it, but I'm used to PSP,

That will be issued when users start complaining about Windows 10. :D
I am running 8, don't like it, tried 10 preview, stinks!!. I am an old XP lover and the only reason I have 8 is because old xp machine died, bought a new HP desktop with 8.1 installed, still stinks. I have some old legacy programs that I would like to run but, money bags Bill doesn't want me to be able to do that. And don't tell me to install them as administrator, that doesn't work very well. I have learned to get along with 8 but, I still don't like it. Sorry for ranting but, just had to say my piece.
Skinny Bob
Msoft have just sent me evaluation copy 9926, I still can't see any differences yet from W8 except that the start button only comes up with reduced metro screen. I have only given it a few minutes upto now so I will post more comments later.
It has a very attractive start screen though.
