I have never understood why the US doesn't have a national service requirement. As BW326 notes not only would those completing their service have vocational/technical training in hand but they would also have experience to help them land that first job.

Personally I enlisted in 1966 and retired in 1988 and the USAF was a perfect fit for me. I realize that military life isn't for everyone ... but working for the country, at prevailing wages, should work for just about everyone and would bring such enormous benefits to the country as a whole and to the people participating in the program.

My 2c worth ... your mileage will almost certainly vary :)

If we have a National Service can we keep the unions out of it?

If we don't it's doomed before it starts.

How about draft for four years and enlist for two years, which would you pick? Probably wouldn't need a draft. Should have at least a two year national service for male and female, just to teach them some respect if nothing else.

I so totally agree with a draft for men and women, and if they want to leave the country instead...well we did not want them anyway.

I did 21 years in the AF and it was one of the smartest moves I have ever made in life.

I did 22 years in USAF. Also the smartest thing I ever did.

I fully agree. I had to join during the draft years. I don't know why but I wanted to get drafted. My two brothers joined and I waited to get drafted but it didn't happen so I joined and stayed 24 years Army.

I knew if I got drafted where I would end up (over the pond) so I joined up USAF, (found myself over the pond anyway) ended up geting out and then spending the next 18 years in the Army Reserves. I wanted to stay AF but also wanted to change jobs, I was told "sign up for another 4 and we'll talk about it". Uh, no thanks. I had 9 years enlisted and the rest as an officer.

And within those 2 years of national service, there could be a layer of embedded technical or vocational training that would count towards the "2 year technical degrees" that were being talked about last night during the state of the union address.

A universal, 2-year national service program would obviously cost a lot of money but by directing service work towards projects that we are going to be paying for anyway (infrastructure, healthcare, new technology, etc..) it would be a very economical use of resources and if there were vocational/technical training hours that went along with that it would be more savings. Example: A high school graduate goes into a 2-year national service program and when he is done with that service he may already have the equivalent of 1 year of vocational/technical school education under his/her belt.

I guess two years "National Service" would be one year of tech school, but 2 years in military service should count as two years college. You learn much more than a community collage on active duty and the training is better than civilian OTJ. Just think of the benefits of a trained and patriotic work force to the country in general.

It would be nice if we had forced registration for all kids on the their 18 bday. We should also reinstate the draft. It would create jobs and teach some morals. Might even teach them to become patriots. Obama is going to destroy our country.
