Leaks are a frequent and ongoing reality.

Hundreds, according to USA Today and other reliable sources, are never reported. All we're talking about is the size of the leaks. It's a maintenance thing and no big surprise, particularly as age sets in.

Are you feeling lucky? Even spacecraft can experience "leaks." Plenty of new technology there!

But the Keystone Pipeline poses no danger...

Such a great benefit to the U.S., yeah, right...

Sure they are going to supply oil for the US (lie). In Nebraska we get more Keystone ads for their pipleine than we got politcal ads. In every one they lie about oil for the US Why should we believe them when they tell us how save the pipeline is going to be. _ Dave fro Nebraska

Yeah, it's much safer to stick it on trucks and trains and run it all over the country......they never crash, or blow up and kill people.

Since I can't take a picture to post here of what is and will be happening at the spill site, let me describe it for you. Having participated in many oil spill clean ups, I know this job will not be done overnight. Often getting to the site of the spill is the hardest thing about the clean up. Even if you can get to the scene of the spill, getting the amount of equipment needed there may not happen for some time. My experience with clean ups is that if 50,000 gals is admitted, then it is probably in the neighborhood of 100,000 gals or more. When recover is underway, for every gal of product recovered, two gals of water or debre and or sludge will comes with it. Cold can be your biggest friend since it gels the product so it doesn't flow away. Getting the tankers and dump trucks to haul the sludge away is always a problem. Trucking companies never have extra tankers and trucks laying around just in case. Since this is winter, dump trucks will be easier to get. Once a truck has the sludge loaded, getting it out of the tankers and dumps is not easy. Then the problem goes to where are you going to take the sludge. It must be processed as a hazardous waste. If all of the above isn't tough enough, what if the spill is occurring under a frozen lake or river. Where do you make your stand? Why not just light it and let it burn? Most of the crude coming out of that area now has a low flash point. Most EPAs officials won't let that happen because of air quality concerns. The work is slow because the sludge builds up on your equipment, workers get cold, bio suits are often required ground is slippery, people wear out, tempers get short and equipment must be regularly cleaned just to get the equipment wheels to turn.

I've had experience with remediation of these spills and because of that, I'm totally in favor of replacing the old pipelines with the new improved technology so these spills stop happening.

Canada doesn't want the leaks!

You are correct, this is a Canadian product which they want to export overseas, so why don't they build a pipeline from Alberta to Vancouver or Pr. Rupert both are open sea ports and a lot closer as the gulf of Mexico. Canada don't want any disaster on their beautiful Rocky Mountain range, very smart, they seem to have a more intellectual representatives in their government as we have.

All someone has to do is allude to creating jobs,no matter how temporary, and you're a hero. I wonder how many Americans will actually benefit.

The figure I heard was that it would create about 30 permanent jobs in the U.S.

I recall all the people that were up in arms because some poor guy lost his Quadcopter in one of the pools at Yellowstone. I would say this trumps a lost quadcopter many times over. Will these same people be as vocal?

The oil is not for U.S. markets, hence part of my objection.

So, the morning of the President's State of the Union Speech, when The Keystone Pipeline will surely be a topic, there's a 50,000 gallon pipeline leak into a Montana river. Perfect timing for the President. I have to wonder about the cause.

Trains are much more dangerous. Three times more oil accidents than pipelines. Last year, an oil tanker collision burned half a town and killed 47 locals. Bet it won't get mentioned.

Towns all across Canada and the USA have trains rolling through small towns, next to schools, with our teachers and children. Trains rattle on tracks that are feet from rivers and lakes. mile long trains roll right through Glacier National Park. The pipeline is politics, when it should be about safety. Trains are three times the accident rate of pipes.

Trains make hundreds of millions of dollars for their owners. Who owns BNSF? Warren Buffett. He is against the pipeline. Really?!! He gives millions to Obama and the EPA.
