And re cash, what about the penny, or even the nickel?

I very seldom use cash or coin. I pay all my bills online, and when I shop, it's with plastic. Various cards give discounts of between 1% - 5%.

I too have a Kindle and find it a Godsend, not only for the reasons you cited, but with my declining eyesight, reading print on paper is becoming increasingly difficult. I need lots of light, and sometimes a magnifying glass. With its lighted screen and abilitly to enlarge the print, the Kindle very nicely solves that problem.

Agreed, getting old is not for the weak of heart! I too find the Kindle much easier to read than a book.

Me too. However, there are times when checks are the most convenient or practicable. For example, I'm in a breakfast club, and am responsible for getting the breakfast money, usually in cash, to our treasurer. Rather than burdening him with all those bills, and sometimes coins, I simply pocket the cash and send him a check.

Right. Checks will be with us for a while.

Remember the show "Max Headroom"? It took place in the future, and no one used cash. All financial transactions were done electronically. At the time, it was pure fantasy.

Eliminating the check will not eliminate stupidity. I see the same thing with cash and credit cards. The order is rung up, and the customer starts looking through her purse for cash or a credit card. Then she has to find the exact change - that 92 cents in coin. Or, she'll run the CC through the wrong way, or run her driver's license through the CC machine. I wonder where these people are when they're not in front of me at a register. How do they even manage to get to the store and back?

And, the fact she is doing it one handed, cause she has to hold her phone, in the other hand.

Yeah, that reminds me of the people who slow down the checkout because they are on the phone. Unbelievable.

The worst was when I was in a doctor's waiting room with a dozen other people. The nurse came out to get a woman who was on the phone. The patient held up her hand, as if to say, "Yeah, the doctor can wait a minute. I'm talking to my friend about the local gossip."

In my part of the country long distance between towns. I always carry cash if you ever hit the snow bank or get stuck you can always get some trucker to give you a pull they are not going to take debit or visa.

There have been a number of studies done by Universities (and others) that have shown that when reading from a screen, people retain approx 1/3 less of the information than when reading the same thing in print. Reading from a screen while in bed also slows the rate at which one falls asleep.

After having been an over the road independent trucker for 42 years I always carried a couple of hundred dollars while on the road, and after retiring 6 years ago I still carry that much cash. Gives me several options when making purchases.

Apple Pay or the like will take the place of a check. They are working on "personal" transactions as we speak.

You're right Amy, and i agree with all ten things listed. Jerry has a good point about the minimum revenue needed for the Post Office being a bunch of bull i suppose. I can't say for sure though, so i guess we'll just have to wait and see on this one.

There is one thing I'm sure of though, and that's the fact that the need for the Post Office is slowly but surely dying. In my business i talk to the Postal Delivery person every day. Just in the past year they keep telling me of the routes being merged since the volume of mail has constantly decreased , making the need for workers less and less. I was just in the Post Office last week and overheard two Postal employees talking. One said to the other, "You know, lot's of things we can do without, but the Post Office will never be one of them". I thought to myself, man have you got a surprise coming your way! The saying that "the only thing that remains the same is change" has never been more true than it is today.

I would ask anyone reading this post to simply save it to your computer, deleting each one of the items listed as they occur. I'm willing to bet within five to ten years, you'll have a blank file (or Cloud.) Of course this is only my opinion, but i'm basing my opinion on the changes I've seen in only around the last twenty short years. I may not have learned a lot in my life but there is one thing that i have, and that is "You never say never."

I think it's accurate.

#8 things you own; software. That is already the case. Read the software agreement. In many cases you will find you do not own the software, you only own the right to run it.

When I was working on my Comp.Program degree in '86 we were told emphatically that we would be a completely paerless society by 2000. No books, no files, no newspapers. No paper used at all for any purpose.(except toilet paper)
They clearly didn't get that right.

When I earned my computer programing degree in 1967 they told us that there wouldn't be a need for programmers because everything would be packages.
