If you don't have a flash that you can bounce off the ceiling, it might be best to try natural light (have him near a window or a soft-light lamp) for a while. This can produce some very nice, natural looking images. Give it a try, you may come out with some professional-looking results that surprise you.

Direct flash is not good for them. If you don't yet have an external flash that'll bounce, nows the time to study up and get one, you're not going to get tired of taking his photos anytime soon and you'll be happier with what bounce flash will do for you going forward.

You can also try using a couple of white sheets to diffuse and reflect light from windows or lamps.

Also - there are many tutorials and training links for photographing newborns - check Google ;)

Two not very expensive things you can do are to get a flash that tilts and swivels for bounce flash or you can get a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 G AF-S lens that you can use without flash.

A good flash that's not very expensive is the new Nikon SB-500. Bounce flash is a fully automatic technique where you bounce the light from the flash off of a white ceiling or wall. It gives a nice natural light that is much better than direct flash on camera, and it should not bother the child.

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S costs around $200. If you raise the iso to 1600 or even 3200 you should be able to get nice natural light photos of your grandchild indoors. You can use P and Auto ISO or you can set the iso high enough to give you 1/60 second.

This is nice! And much more natural looking than it would be with the on-camera flash. Eyes wide open, no squinting, precious! You can fiddle with post processing and make it even better. Gorgeous baby, you have a model for years to come but he won't always be this still for you!

Such a beautie! Congratulations. Natural light or a soft, continuous light can be a good friend. Up you ISO if necessary but the 3300, above 800 ISO you may start to get noise. Watch your White Balance. Try shots in the nursery near a window, keep him warm if doing him in his "birthday suit". Wide aperture, up close, use a sheet or blanket as a backdrop, lay him on pillows or a covered bean bag, or a fluffy, clean bathroom rug. Have someone close by to hold him. Most of all, just have fun!

Who does he look like? When my first grandson was born I was lucky enough to have been in the op room. Daughter in law had to have a C section. The dr. saw me trying to look over to see what was going on and told me to come around so I could see real good. My "job" was to take pictures, but I was in such aw I totally forgot. Didn't get even one picture. He is a duplicate of my son who is a duplicate of my hubby who is a male version of his mother.

What a handsome young gentleman. The natural light is the way to go for your pictures. If you can afford a fast lens, you'll enjoy many more photos. Noise would no longer be much of a problem as you'll be able to set the ISO to a lower setting. Enjoy your handsome grandson.

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S is a very good fast lens, and it only costs around $200. The depth-of-field at f/1.8 is very narrow, so you may want to use it at f/2.8 to get the baby's whole face in focus.

Depth-of-field, if you don't already know, is the space in front of and behind the point that the lens is focused on that is in sharp focus. For a given lens you get more DOF when you stop down the lens (go to an f-stop with a larger number). Make sure that you get the eyes in focus.
