I would have told him, "Excuse me, but you have mistaken me for someone who gives a fat rat's ass what you think."

You could have asked the guy if he takes his mother with him everywhere he goes.

Why should YOU feel humiliated by HIS stupidity? HE proved himself a jerk, and a moron. More stability is always better than less, and a tripod always gives more stability than you get without a tripod.

In my opinion a person who would act like that is not worth the effort of a reply.

Other issue: I shoot with the following cameras
Mamiya RB67 --Speed graphic 4x5 ---Canon 20d ---Sinar 4x5 monorail view camera.

I hardly ever shoot without my Majestic tripod and gear driven camera mount. For me it would be foolish. It is nobody's business what gear you use and I feel that you should not hesitate to say so.

By the way: Good post!

Hi...I thought I'd posted this earlier this week...but have not seen it listed here so will post again.

Recently my Fiance and I went on a leisurely photoshoot for fun and relaxation to one of our favorite places here in southern Maine. I should point out I have a mild case of Tourettes Syndrome with which my hand shakes occasionally and I use my tripod and release cable to get really clear photos.

We were shooting away when a couple approached us and the gentleman had a nice SLR in his hand. I said hello...nice day and then be got snobby and asked me...in a condescending voice..."why are you shooting in the bright sun with a tripod and cable release...it's probably 1/1000 second". I said "for stability". Before I had a chance to explain my issue...he said "get rid of that tripod and get a good one...throw it out"...a little puff of wind will blow it over"...and then walked off.

I have a relatively new MePhoto Roadtripper I got earlier this year and paid $200 for it...which on my budget is decent money.

Needless to say it put a damper on the shoot which we were just finishing anyway and I felt humiliated by his unnecessary comments. Once of out ear-range my Fiance called him a couple of names to me I won't write here...but it got me thinking...what did I do to deserve this? I was just being nice and got lambasted for it.

Lesson here...always take the high road...be friendly...and please don't make disparaging comments to anyone. Nobody deserves that.

For what it's worth...have a good day...and remember to please be kind to everyone.

Any unsolicited a "advice" is usually "attack", for who knows why. Deficient people feast on others.

I believe you might be correct about the unsolicited advice.
Marc handled himself like a true gentleman. That sorry excuse for a photographer could of wanted Marcs advantage point.
I only ever had one issue with another so called photographer, and yes .. it was here in southern Maine.

I was up early to catch the rising sun behind the Nubble Lighthouse. I got set up on the rocks and was waiting.

Not 10 minutes went by when this A-Hole came along and set up 30 feet in front of me obstructing my intended view. I know if I was 40 years younger there would of been some kind of altercation. But I am not in my 20's any more .. So what did I do .. I packed up and went home. There is always tomorrow.. There are some in this world that think of no one but themselves. And by the way .. the cloud cover made for a more interesting shoot the following morning

Too bad there are people like that in this world, but alas, these morons do exist. I do Arts & Crafts shows where I showcase and sell my fine art photography...I have had my share of elitists come into my booth and make rude comments. In one case a photographer, in front of several buying customers, said, "How dare you sell at these prices." I simply replied, "I guess I do not have to rip off people like you do at your booth." With that she turned and walked out as people were clapping, cheering and handing me money. In another case, this guy was standing in front of a photo pontificating about how he knew the process I used and how I created the image. I just had to walk over and introduce myself. I told him I heard everything he said, but unfortunately, he was completely wrong. His female friend punched him in the arm, saying, "You always think you know everything." I think he was going to sleep on the couch that night.

I have a lightweight, carbon fiber Manfrotto tripod my wife bought me many years ago. I works for me as yours for you.

Keep snapping, keep smiling.
Dan

Thanks all for your comments and stories. I guess we here in southern Maine attract all sorts of folks. And nice to know you all have your own stories to tell.

Keep up the good work...and thanks for sharing.

Marc :-)

You will often see me out & about with my 4 yr old 400D, couple of Tamrons also the kit lens.
I enjoy being amongst the “big boys” at functions & the only comments I get is “that was my first camera” & they then relate the good times they had shooting with it.
A good friend of mine sums me up “I’m an inverted sob”
As often said on UH – ‘it’s not the gear, but what you do with it. Do your own thing, Good luck

Hi Dennis.

Looking through old posts here and you wanted to know what store I like. Photo Shops on Forest Avenue in Portland (Maine) is the one I use...it's Maine's largest Indie photo store and they have an excellent staff. Peter is the owner...if you're in the area...stop in and tell him I sent you. He's very nice and the store is packed full of anything you need.

Let me know if you ever get up here...would like to trade stories in person.

Regards...Marc
