Who cares what century it is anyway? Just put '15 on checks after the month and day and let the billing company try to cash it. You can always tell the bank you wrote the check back in 1915 and it should have been only good for 90 days.
If you get into trouble, at our age, just claim alzheimer's or dementia and say "Isn't Truman still in the Whitehouse?"
LOL.

I wasn't knocking cups and pints etc. but the metric system is so clearly superior to the old standard measures. I was brought up the old way with feet, inches, ounces and pounds etc but use metric exclusively now. So much easier and logical.

Hmm, where does that put me, I learned a little cooking from my grandmother and tend to use dabs, dashes, pinches, season to taste etc. Try explaining that when giving someone instructions. But it works.
Mostly I do biscuits (scones sorta for the UK), chocolate chip cookies, Chili con Carne, Bar B Que meat on the grill, corn bread, southern fried cat fish and similar things the doctors now tell me will kill me if I even look at them.

The BBC is supposed to be the suppositary of good language but I am am irritated by a recent habit of saying, for instance, more quickly instead of quicker. What's happened to the ER?

ROFL

You want to wedge the BBC into your rectum to improve your
language??? I don't think think the BBC will like that.

Good luck with it anyway.

Uh ...
English is not my native language, but whether we admit it or not, today everyone thinks that they speak good English (and so do I :D ). It reminds me of the Italian seller in Venice who on question "Do you speak English?" responded with "Si, si!"
If we talk about usage of "faster" and "more quickly", it looks loke to me as Orwell's NewSpeak in 1984 (and Eurythmics) and the good, plusgood, doubleplusgood and fascinating ungood instead of bad.

Such language problems are evident on all national televisions. Our speakers are inventing new words and new pronunciation. The worst language occurs in a bad translation from another language.

Another interesting thing that appears by using technology (SMSing on cell phones) in my language (Croatian) is the use of the old verb form (aorist) because it is shorter to write. As you said flashgordonbrown, people are lazy and this is example where laziness act as motivator.

PS: I am sorry for my not so perfect English, I know that you will forgive me.

Don't worry about your English, it's pretty good - definitely better than my Croatian!

Welcome to UHH, hope you enjoy your time here.

Some of our members forget that many posters are not native speakers. And of course the US and Canadians speak English a little different from the UK members.
