Personally I would use the picture just as it is with just a bit more contrast and mute the highlights slightly. Actually I like the birdhouse in the background as it adds realism.

On a recent trip to Italy I shot with Nikon D7000 while wife shot many cell phone photos (iphone 5). The phone shots don't look too bad until you compare them to the D7000 shots, but when you do they are pretty bad.

There are some remarkable algorithms that UP-SIZE the photo much better than the "standard" ones. Photozoom by BenVista
www.benvista.com
There is a free trial... or wow $100 to buy.

Here's my stab at it. Re-sized and added some contrast and other things. Her jacket is too blow out to do much with, I toned it down as much without looking fake.

My girlfriend and I took this picture today from my cell phone and would really like to enlarge it to atleast a 12x18. Would like to have it framed and would like to take next year's picture holding this picture and continue throught the years holding last years picture. Is there any way to enlarge this without losing quality and without the blurry pixelation? I have photoshop, I know there is a way to enlarge it without losing quality but not sure how to do it.

With most cell phone images today enlarging to 12x18 isn't a problem. 10MP or more would do fine at that size.

The problem with this image is that the girls coat is "blown out"...too bright so the detail doesn't show. I'm a bit surprised the default metering did this because I'd expect only the bright sky to blow out in this image...which would be fine.

If your cell phone will let you try reducing the exposure by 1 EV or so. Or try again on a cloudy day or towards evening.

Don't think you'll like a blowup of that size from a cellphone camera.
Cute girl. You're a lucky guy. ;)

Goodness--all you have to do is run it through "Perfect Resize"--which is about the same program that they use to make the giant enlargements in Union Station in NYC--not sure how many mega pixels you have but you should be fine--I use it all the time.

Very nice photo, but please remove the squirrel feeder from her head. Next year try to look closely to what is in the background. Good luck and looking to next year's photo.

There is enough detail to print a 12 x 18, however IMHO the photo needs a bit of PP first. The highlights are blown, so the detail is lost. It also is a bit flat, lacking contrast.
What I did was, in Camera Raw.....
Lower exposure and highlights to remove clipping,
Lower blacks and raise clarity to improve contrast and make it "pop" a bit.
I cropped it to 3:2 ratio, then in Perfect Resize, I resized to 12x18 at 240ppi.
Finally, back in Camera Raw I added some sharpening.
My result......
There is enough detail to print a 12 x 18, however... (show quote)

Great Job !

Here is another enhancement of your sweet picture. (The download should have plenty of pixels for your project. (If not, email me at: djcraig@npgcable.com)

Thanks, Nacknouck - and after saving my own "download" picture from this post, I've discovered that the Ugly Hedgehog reduces dramatically the size of even the downloaded pictures...not nearly a large enough size to enlarge, I'm sure.

It's your photo, leave it as-is and next year you will probably have a different phone/camera. Each year, not only will the subjects change, so will your photography. Great idea!!

[quote=clevbolt]This picture is a bit over exposed. I will show histogram and sample with less light. Its under 1 MB which is a bit small to make that large. I took a landscape picture with out people and turned it into a brush stroke painting with photoshop and enlarged it and it was OK. Try and you will know. David

This is 12" x 18.9" right now, and enhanced a bit. You can have it printed to this size, an adjust (cut) the top and bottom to fit the frame the way you like it. I hope this helps.
