Arlene, I just got my new Nikon D7100...definately overwhelming but your discussions have helped me a great deal so I'm looking forward to learning all I can! I still have my D3200 to fall back on but I want to be really comfortable when I go to NYC in April. So much to capture and I want to be able to photograph my granddaughter dancing in Times Square..I have a lot of frustration with my 3200 and I usually fall back on my IPhone 5S. But I'm hoping this year will have different results!

I too have David Busch's D7100 book and Field Guide. They are both excellent and detailed. After I read these a few times I happened to pick up John Batdorff's book "From Snapshots to Great Shots" Nikon D7100. It a small book and excellent for a quick read and reference...very easy to follow and informative.

Anyhow, thats my story and I'm sticking to it! :-D :-D

Thanks for your two cents, I will look into J.B's book as well.

I order any field guides from B&N as NOOK books. I can carry the NOOK around, use a NOOK reader on the PC, use a NOOK APP on my smart phone. I find it easy to download the guides to my smart phone. I always have my phone, therefore I have my guide books available all the time. NOOK books are a little cheaper than the printed copy.

Hi SherylK,
It seems like Nikon sold a lot of D7100s during the holidays. Congratulations!
I'm very excited and intimidated with my new camera. But, there seems to be a wealth of information out there and lots of support on this awesome forum. I think you will be ready by April to use your d7100 and get great images of your granddaughter dancing on Times Square. I just ordered "Mastering the Nikon D7100, by Darrel Young, from Amazon. I'm going to look for some tutorials on Utube, also. I'm hoping the book and all the other info will get me started on a fun journey viewing the world in a more passionate way.
Let us know how you are progressing. Good luck.
Arlene

Max the Maven has a great video on the D7100 that will get you up and running quickly. Buy the download with the disks to come later. Darrel Young's book Mastering the D7100 is so helpful plus the owners manual. I am pleased with the results from the D7100. Don't be afraid of shooting in manual and increasing the ISO up to 1600+ to allow for faster shutter speeds (Times Square Dancing). This shot I took at ISO 100 f4.5 1/15 of a second and was able to bring it up to what you see here with some tweaking in iPhoto (basic slider post processing). The original shot was grossly underexposed but the detail was in the shot just the same.

I have them all because I am a 'slow learner'. But I like Darrell Young's the best.

Besides the manual, which instruction book would you recommend for someone not familiar with a dslr camera? I see some have recommended David Busch, Darrell Young, "...Dummies" ??? Trying to decide. Ready to order! :)

The best book that I found is Mastering the Nikon D7100 by Darrell Young. It is published by Rockynook Nikonians Press.

I found it very well written and easy to follow.

Check out Short Courses. I bought a manual for my D7000 a few years ago. Best manual ever.

I also have David Busch's duo. I just finished the full version and I have the field guide in my camera bag. They are both excellent.

I really got a lot out of David Busch's D7100 guide (I also bought the field guide recently, just to keep in my camera bag). I read the bigger book cover to cover and kept it on the end table next to my chair for reference...until a month ago, when my bloodhound decided she needed to chew something up. Maybe the glue smelled good to her?

I like the Busch guide as well. However, the guide indicates that there is a "Remote Control" position on the Release Mode dial of the 7100. Mine does not have one. I went to the Nikon manual and found out that the remote control function for the ML-L3 , at least on my D7100, is activated through the menu system.

Blue Crane cheat sheets are great to keep in your camera bag when you don't wantt to haul the book.
