I have the SB600, and I am trying to trigger it with a Phottix flash trigger. I use the Phottix Odin system, with my SB910, and it works great, but when I try to use it with the SB600, I can seem to navigate the menu, to find the setting. The SB910, has a switch for "remote," so it very easy to set and use. The SB600, however, is a lot more involved to set up. I currently have the SB600, set up to use in Commander mode, and it works find it that mode.

I called Nikon, but the rep. I got on the phone, didn't have a clue to what I was asking. I guess I could Google the question, but I thought I would see what my fellow Hoggers, have to say.

The SB910 has Commander mode, but the SB600 does not.

Any help, as usual, will be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean the SB-600 does not have commander mode? Are you saying I cannot set my SB-600 off using the pop up flash on my camera? Because I can and do....

The SB 600 does not have a commander mode, ie: it cannot be used to control other off-camera flashes. It only works as a remote receiver as you are using it.

This thread has become convoluted and off topic. The OP is trying to get his SB600 working with a Phottix transmitter/receiver.

I mentioned (before learning the OP has a D800) the Phottix system will not work with a D70 or D70s.

The Phottix does not work as a Commander, so putting the camera into Commander mode is not relevant.

Thank you, again. I haven't had a chance to play around with it, yet, but will do and let you know. I have a few jobs lined up and was hoping to be able to use the 600, on remote. If not I'll have to use the commander mode feature. If that doesn't work, I have a friend who has a few flashes, I can use, and have as a backup. He usually comes along and acts as my assistant, which is very handy, because I hate borrowing equipment.

Thanks again, and take care.
Mike

Just ran across this posted on a web site... could your issue be the SB-600 going into standby mode and the remote trigger not being able to wake it up?

SB-600 for Wireless Flash

The one other option working with the SB-600 is to attach a (radio) trigger on the flash foot, since there is no optical slave mode, nor a PC socket. When using radio triggers itÂ’s recommended to deactivate the standby mode. To learn more about wireless flash, go to the SB-600 remote flash section.

The SB-600 Instruction Manual can be downloaded from here ---> https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13455/~/speedlight-sb-600-instruction-manual

See page 52 to set Wireless Remote Flash mode.
See page 61 to set channel and group.

I don't know if this will work with your master flash - the Phottix.

Thanks for the help. I'm hoping to have time later today to try it out. Thanks again, and Happy New Year. Mike

I just figured it out. Naturally it was my fault. I had the flash on Commander Mode. I thought I had taken it off, but I forgot to hit the OK button, so it was still on that setting. Once I took off of Commander mode and back on Manual and TTL, it worked fine. I feel like an idiot, and probably am, but the expression, "Haste makes waste," is certainly true, especially in my case.

The manual is always the way to go, but I usually have trouble finding it when I need it.

Thanks again for helping me out. I really appreciate it.

I do not have a remote trigger set as you are talking about, but should't it be that the flash is set to use the signal from the trigger receiver like it was mounted on the hot shoe of the camera? So basically don't you set the flash like you were shooting on camera?

Commander mode on the camera uses the pop up flash to trigger the remote flash, but the wireless just uses the hot shoe mounted transmitter to trigger the receiver right?

Hope I am not late responding. Was sick and just recovered. The trick using the Phottix system is put the flash, SB600 included in TTL or manual mode. Do not go to Remote on SB910 or wireless connection on SB600.I just used both and they work fine.
