sorry - dupe.

now there is a 24-120 doing its job.
Creamy background, soft vignetted edges, nice center.
Guess thats why so many studios used it for portraits.

I see some knocks on the 24-120 and I think the negative comes from earlier versions of this lens which some reviewers call one of the three worst lenses Nikon ever made. The latest version the constant f4 design has gotten pretty good reviews and the people I've talked to that own one say it never leaves their camera!

I agree that the 24-120 f4 is better than the previous 24-120 3.5g vr, but the quality of the pictures taken with the later improves greatly when used on a dx camera. It was designed prior to the time when the first fx cameras came out. I have found that if it is used on a dx camera it does a good job. The worst thing about the lens is the one sided evaluation Ken Rockwell gave it. The best thing about the lens is how cheap you can buy one.

Here is a post just put up this weekend by the moderator of the Nikon Rumors forum where he pushed the 24-120mm F4G VR NANO to its limits shooting in bad weather at 24mm and F4. The results look more than acceptable to me. Pretty much the same results I have had with my 24-120mm on my Df, a combo that almost never comes apart for me.

I agree with some of the other posts regarding the 35-70 2.8d. I've had that lens for many years. I find it very sharp and solidly built. Not quite the same lore behind it compared with the 28-70, but it's a bit lighter and much more affordable. I use it on my d600

I have the 24-120. I figure if it's good enough for Micheal Melford, it's good enough for me.

I totally understand the weight issue when you have to carry the camera for any length of time. Another option would be prime lenses. You could buy the 24MM, 50MM and 85MM for probably around $700 (that assumes you buy the 24MM & 85MM used in great shape). It all depends if you can deal with shooting primes. If you have to shoot a zoom I would probably go with the 24-85MM. I have the 24-120MM and I'm not impressed, plus it's nearly as heavy as the 24-70MM so what's the point.

If you'd like some objective input on any of these lenses I recommend going to DXOMark.com. It takes a little fiddling but you can get it to compare any lenses for any cameras they have tested it with.

Since the D750 is new the lenses may not have been tested with it. I have found that changing the camera often has far more effect on their lens ratings for the same lens than comparing lenses does. If they don't have the ones you want tested on the D750 using the results for the D6xx should be provide a good relative comparison.

Sometimes you need to look at the individual item ratings, not just the overall, for your purpose.

guess thats why dxomark recommends 24-120 for the D810 and nikon packages it with the 810.

It's called marketing. Notice Pop Photo never did a published review. If a lens tests badly....no review.

24-85 is 3.2" and 16.4 oz.
24-120 is 4.1" and 25 oz.
24-70 is 5.2" and 31.7 oz.

I see there are two Nikon 24-85s; an f2.8 and an F4.

Looks like about a 20% increase in price and weight for the f2.8.

Anyone compared image quality?

(actually 3: there are two 2.8s)

For those using or contemplating the 24-120 f4 VR be aware that this lens is generally sharpest at f5.6. I found this statement in an article somewhere on the Web (sorry don't have the link) and set up a test to verify it. I did my test at 50mm using a test chart and careful focusing and found the statement to be correct, though the loss of sharpness at f4 and f8 is small. Supposedly at 24 mm sharpness at f4 is as good as at f5.6, but I haven't checked this yet.

Think i'll probably go 24-120 - will I be disappointed after the 24-70 ? will probably use it between 60 - 80 mm not the top end and certainly not wide end.

Should that be the case(you shooting from 60-60mm), why bother with the added expense of the 24-120? The 24-85 is right where you want to be. I have the 24-85, f3.5-4.5VRg on my 610 and it is awesomely crisp. You won't be sorry and it is cost effective.

NO BRAINER!

Agree with others. Pump some iron and keep the 24-70. It would be a shame to make that investment and then relegate it to a spot in your closet. Or, if you're really intent on doing this- sell the 24-70 right here.

I love my "dog". Looked at the 24-70 2.8 and felt it was kind of big for a walk around lens. And too expensive for me. I don't doubt that the 24-70 is a great lens but the 24-120 F4 has more reach, is fast enough for me, is lighter, has "VR" and has the "N" coating that is on Nikon's good lenses.
