I know, this is an older camera, but I love it! I just need to learn how to use it better. I would like to take a picture with the background blurring out- can anyone tell me the best setting. I have managed a couple times to get some 'fuzz' in the background but that is all. Thanks!

I used to shoot on a S3IS and probably shot about 25,000 shots on it. My wife still has it and it's still going, great camera. A little more info on the type of shot you're doing? Macro, landscape, portrait?

Thank you for helping! I am doing portrait shots, wanting the person in full focus, and the background, fall foliage blurred. I love the look of a person close and a long road fading off in the background as well... thanks again

The best, and only possible way for you to blur the background is to use full zoom. Framing your subject, and getting as close as the focal length will allow.

Even at that the short focal length, and small sensors of P&S cameras severely over do depth of field. They are not the best cameras for the Bokay effect, ( I think I spelled it right) anyway its Japanese for blurred background.

I don't think you got my last message, in case not: I am doing portrait shots outdoors, I did the zoom process as described by the other post and that worked but I would like to 'fine tune' if possible. If you have other ideas- I appreciate it.

Keep your f/stop low 2.1-2.8 and keep about 4-6feet away. Keep your exposure at -0- and your ISO low 80-200. Your f/stop determines your DOF or depth of field the lower the number the more out of focus your background will be. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you as well. I have the same camera and have been playing with the zoom and learning to do the zooming in on subject as well. Here are a couple of shots of mine zooming in.
