I started with the software that came with my Sony camera years ago. When I made the switch from a Sony camera to a Nikon I started with the Nikon program that came with the camera. I then went from PC to Mac and started with iPhoto and when I decided I wanted more I went to PSE 11. I registered on the adobe site and got an e mail giving me a 90 day free trial of lightroom and now I use lightroom and PSE 11 and am happy with the results.

Is there anything else besides Lightroom (95%) and Photoshop (5%)?

Yep, I started with Iphoto, moved to Aperture, then when Apple announced they were giving up on Aperture I switched to Lightroom and Photoshop for the 9.99 monthly photographers bundle - GREAT!

In my opinion, Lightroom is head and shoulders above Aperture for raw conversion and editing. It is as good as Aperture for keywording and organizing. And then you have Photoshop ;)

I used to say that Lightroom did 90% of my editing, Photoshop did the other 10%, but honestly now the percentages are changing to more like 75% & 25% I think.

Really great tools.

Same path I took. But, so far I do everything in LR. I have to force myself to get familiar with PS. I didn't make any New Year resolutions, so maybe that can be one.

Check out Pixelmator , it is an app especially for a Mac and is very powerful and it is about $20. They also have a video for $5 going into detail about each tool

Very powerful program

The other programs are al very good it comes down to how much time one wants to invest in learning how to use . All software has a learning curve and needs to be used daiy(IMHO) to gain full control

I use Photoshop CS6 (pricey if you can even get it anymore). I also have dabbled with Lightzone (free).

I have a MBPro and use LR and PSE. I love LRs organizational abilities, and batch editing capability. It automatically sees and opens your raw files with no problem and it has an interface to which you can bounce back and forth between PSE and LR. I use PSE for difficult cloning and layering of my adjustments to an image. I use LR 90% and PSE 10%. You can get the CC version for $9.99/mos but I bought the hard copy. Most professional family and portrait photogs I know have this type of setup.

Apple will be introducing "Photos" to replace Aperture and iPhoto. Be patient.

What gets me is why would you go and buy an expensive camera, lens,pc or mac etc and then shoot in jpeg or use a PP pogram that only will do your images in 8 bit ?
By doing so you are loosing a lot of information from your images.

Guess I'm the exception on this forum. I enjoy snapping the pics for family and friends enjoyment. Getting knee deep in photo manipulation becomes work and not a labor of love. I use iPhoto which gives me the basics to simply lighten or darken a photo with a few other choices of adjusting highlights, exposure, sharpen etc. I like it because it's simple and doesn't require a master's degree to use layers etc. I hope Apple's "Photos" is a good replacement when it comes out. I must admit I purchased Lightroom 4 over a year ago and have been afraid to even install it after reading horror stories from folks that had fits with it regarding libraries, organization etc. I like simple and with 36,000 photos, iPhoto is still working for me on my several macs.

I agree with Dngallagher that Lightroom is a great option and It does NOT take over your computer nor change folders unless you tell it to. Also, I recommend using names like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements rather then CS6 because newer photographers may not know what you are talking about.

I have a Mac and have installed on my computer, Lightroom, Photoshop, OnOne, Nik and Topaz. I use Lightroom all the time and that is a must. I like using Photoshop but now find myself going to OnOne as they have so much to offer and it is so easy to use. Nik would also be a good choice. They all offer free trial so check them out. I might add Photoshop is great but it takes a lot of time to learn it so you might also try Elements which is a watered down photoshop.
