Limitations of a Compact Camera?

I posted this photo on a completely different site and someone cfriticised it and wrote that "it showed the limitations of compact cameras". Rather than showing the limitations I rather think that it shows just what a compact camera is capable of. Does anyone agree?

It looks even better if you can enlarge it although in this particular case the sample I have used I had reduced in size to be able to send it by e-mail to a friend.

The camera was a Panasonic TZ7.

I agree with you.

We can't always carry a big DSLR around with a variety of lenses.. There are many Compact Cameras that fill that gap nicely..

I also agree with you. the soft pink of the petals, and soft lighting gives this photo a calming relaxing feeling, totaly unlike the feeling you get by drinking a pangalactic gargleblaster, being thrown into the total perspective vortex, or being forced to listen to vogon poetry. rember in the words of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy "don't panic" :!:

Thanks Larry, I agree of course and I think that the person who criticised the photo was making a rather snide remark.

I'm attaching some more shots taken with the same camera. The second one was incredibly difficult to photograph since it is basically a convex made of hundreds and hundreds of heptagonals of polished stainless steel. Taking a straight photograph didn't show anything and the only way to show what it is was to shoot with figures in front so that they were reflected.

I laugh in their general direction. pocket cameras are very capable of shooting better photos than DSLR versions. If you've ever seen what a Leica rangefinder can do you would easily wake them up.

Lovely shots Bobmielke.

I will soon be moving on to a Canon Powershot SX1 1S that has had a lot of rave reviews and is the bridge between a compact camera and a full blown SLR. Can't wait to see the results I can get from it.

Here's another "straight" shot of the Anish Kapoor piece so you'll see what I mean about it being difficult to photograp

i don't know about *better* - that depends more on the photographer than the camera. but many compacts, especially the newer ones with good resolution and better noise control, are capable of capturing images that are quite comparable to some DSLRs if the photographer does his part. Panasonics, if i'm not mistaken, use Leica lenses, which is a huge part of their image quality. my old FZ20, while it can't hold a candle to my DSLRs in most respects, was capable of amazing image quality if it was used in good light and within its ISO performance limitations.

Really nice photos Rocky but you should really say which camera you were using at the time.

I too would have reservations about "better" but am of the opinion that compacts at times are capable of producing really stunning images.

I'm not sure whether my Olympus 5050 counts as a compact camera but the two orchid photos that I'm attaching were taken with that.

Hmmm... well... you can see what kind of camera I use under my posts in the signature line.

I resemble that remark!! *wink*

Whomever was trying to squelch your spirit; just ignore them and keep doin' what you're doin'!

When you get the new camera (ENVY alert!)... you'll be that much further ahead of the game!

Your pics are lovely :)

WHOA! Either bobmielke has a 5,000,000mm zoom lens, or he's just plumb crazy to have gotten the big kitty-cat's up-close-and-personal picture! What great shots--both of them!
