Idiotic California lets Illegals drive without insurance

Legal CA residents are required to carry drivers insurance and must show proof of insurance to get or renew a drivers license or keep it valid. See:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr18
That's for LEGAL residents. Illegals get a special privilege:

California's recent law, allowing illegals to obtain drivers licenses, DOES NOT require that the new applicants show any proof of insurance. Does this discriminatory special treatment, lobbied for by the powerful illegal lobby, make any sense to law-abiding Californians ... or anyone else?

I see uninsured coverage rates going up and up.

If this is true I have a suggestion. Let's make Mexico a deal. Build the great wall between the US and Mexico (including California)and Mexico takes posession of California. Latinos currently outpace the number of non-latino whites in California so let's make it official. California is now Mexico and the drug cartels can pay off the public debt in California including the $584 billion unfunded public pension liability.

You are correct. We already pay a hefty hidden surcharge to subsidize the non-insured drivers. And that cost will continue to increase.

A modest proposal: Why not make driver's post proof of insurance stickers on the outside of their cars, much like the registration proof is posted on the license plates. Doing so would be easy and would vastly cut down the problem of uninsured motorists.

More right wing bullshit:

"Law enforcement officials say the program will improve road safety because licensed drivers must be tested and insured. A DMV study based on 23 years of crash data found that unlicensed drivers were more likely to cause a fatal collision than licensed drivers."

You need proof of insurance to register a vehicle, not to get a drivers license.

You need insurance and a valid license to drive a car legally in California.

That being said, I'll bet we will see more licensed drivers driving without insurance.

But the driver must show that he or she is covered by the insurance no matter what who owns the car.

Most insurance that I'm aware of covers any licensed driver not excluded by the policy.

Legal CA residents are required to carry drivers i... (show quote)

Where is the evidence that undocumented drivers aren't required to carry insurance? I believe one of the reasons for giving them licenses was so they can get insurance.

The insurance covers the car, not the driver, at least most places?

The matter was extensively discussed, even in liberal media like the Los Angeles Times.

Also, to help put the matter in perspective, Latino advocacy groups have long fought enforcement of insurance-required laws, claiming such laws were "discriminatory" since so many Latinos, legal and illegal, choose not to obtain insurance.

Not incorrect. When I renew my drivers license nobody asks me about my insurance. The exception would be a driver who has a prior for an accident with no insurance.
When I renew my registration I have to provide proof of insurance unless DMV has it on file. It will usually be on file.

They may or may not have fought them. If they did they lost. You cannot register a car without proof of insurance and if you drop the insurance the insurance company will notify DMV and they will revoke the registration.

Most insurance will not cover unlicensed drivers. Now they can become licensed and obtain insurance.
