You should never leave charged batteries of any type in the charger once it is unpowered. If it has power, it will "trickle charge" the batteries. Unpowered, it will provide a discharge path that will deplete the batteries over time...

Yes this will happen every time for the exact reason stated above.
All batteries self discharge over time.
I used to use some "15 minute Rapid Chargers" but I found that this greatly reduced their life.
I am currently using a pair of Powerex (MAHA) MH-C9000 which have indvidual programable charge rates for each of its 4 AA/AAA slots. Charge Rates are from 100 ma - 2000 ma in 100 ma steps. Default is 1000 ma which is fine for AA's bot to high for AAA's. I typically charge at 50% or lower of the batteries mAh rating for the longest battery life (recharge cycles)
It also has Charge, Refresh/Analyze, Break In, and Discharge cycles all programable.
Sanyo's Eneloop batteries are well known for holding a charge over time, better than other brands.
I have used Eneloop batteries for years and never had an issue with them.....I think there are instructions that tell you not to leave them in the charger once they have been charged......
I forgot to mention I use the Sanyo charger
Hey there
I am B.C. in electronics, photographer and Eneloop user.
Some chargers have extra circuit inside set to drain the excessive charging current in order to protect the battery during the charge. When unplugged this is actually draining the batteries. So, .. leaving the batteries in the charger - big no - no ...
As for Eneloop - still no substitute. Simply the best ...

I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond. It has been very helpful.
I use Eneloop batteries, they work great and don't loose their charge. If I intend to use them on a shoot. I place them in a charger and make sure they are topped off.
I use a Maha MH C801D charger that enables me to charge 8 batteries at a time.
I never leave any batteries alkaline or otherwise in my flash unit between uses or shoots.
If rechargeables are not your cup of tea consumer reports rates the Kirkland batteries at Costco as a good buy compared to the high end and mos expensive batteries
