Just what I expected, wonderfully faded.

Here is the whole environmental shot. I missed it. Suggestions on composing this better are welcome. SS ... I think it's against the rules but I'm going to say that I used a ultra wide lens. I would like to know if anyone would have used a different lens. This shot is unedited and shot in raw. Please feel free to show me a crop that works. Do not make it look funky or add weird colors to it. It is a nature shot. Please respect my vision for it.

This fish house is a flip top portable. It is leaning .. it is not because the wide angle perspective made it that way. The whole thing flips open on the hinges on the back.

Sometimes I want to add more motion to a shot. Used a slow shutter speed to capture the environment of a run.

Nightski, we don't have any rules.
It's just that if we don't provide any "story", we get untainted feedback, which is a desirable thing.
Usually when I post a shot I say nothing about it, including no name.
Unless of course we want something specific as in your case. ;-)
I would have gotten slightly lower, almost on the ground so the ice would play a more important roll. I would have gotten a little closer to the boxes in the foreground. The wide angle would make them appear huge, adding drama or impact. I never mess much with colors. Some people in the shot, even in the distance could be good. ;-)

SS is right on all points, get down low and close with that wide angle lens, use the distortion for dramatic effect. A person would be good too. Think about that shot of mine showing the worm casts on the beach, that's what I mean about getting low.

Version #2 is very nice. This thread isn't about pp, but if it were I would ask, if you wouldn't mind, what did you do to produce such a different result in the second photo? How did you remove the rust?

I went back into my file to get your answer - it appears as though the flash is the difference.

#1 was taken w/flash @28mm

I am posting a shot of the same area taken w/o flash 1 min. later (taken while he was at the fire)

#2 was taken (when he returned -1 more min.) w/o flash @28mm - that is why there is a slight shift in POV.

no flash
no flash...

I could have gotten the person inside. I saw him getting dropped off with his gear and he was all set up while I was still a long ways off .. so I snuck up on his set up .. I was busy putting my lens on, setting up my tripod and adding a grad filter ... he yelled .. Hey! What are you doing! and flipped his shelter open. Geez .. scared the heck out of me and I was too shy to ask to take a pic of him. So I just asked if he minded if I used his set up in my pic, and he said sure and flipped his shelter closed.

So then after a while .. it takes me a while in that kind of cold ... he flipped open again and started talking to me. : I still was too shy to take his pic. Geez! I hate that about myself! It looked really cool inside his shelter too .. ice and water all over .. a lamp .. fishing rod ..

He did give me some great tips on finding eagles and ospreys there this summer. And he told me where all the walleyes are in case I want to fish. :-)

Yep ... lower .. I'm going back this weekend ... I thought I was low .. but I think I don't get that whole wide angle thing yet.

That is something I need to experiment more with. I am always fighting distortion instead of using it to advantage.

Minnie, just so you know, though everything has SOME environment, this shot is starting to lean more heavily into the realm of juxtaposition.
Remember we're working on recognizing the differences!

But it's amazing how different a night shot is over a day shot of the same place. ;-)

then on to San Felipe, Mexico. I'll try to follow the thread as time allows.

Anyway, carry on.

BTW, Frankie sends his regards.

Jim, in case you are still looking, just so you know, the very first shot I posted on environment on page 27 was taken in Puertocitos, the next town down from San Felipe. There are some great Pelican shots there down on the tip by the Hot Springs at sunrise! ;-)
