Me too!!!

Born in 1939 and feel about 30 --- I walk between 5 and 8 miles a day around town on average. This morning I was out a little before sunrise and walked over to the Golden Gate Bridge and back, about 5 1/2 mi. and later this afternoon I may walk over to one of my favorite watering holes on Fisherman's Wharf (about 3 mi. round trip) for happy hour.

I was born in the 20th century....and forget how old I am. However, I recall waking up one morning and while looking in the mirror, I blurted out "I feel like a million today". A voice from the other room shouted back "you look it too".....LOL ;)

I'm sure some of know what the oldest flying jet is. In case you don't know, it's an F-86A, built in 1948. It's almost as old as I am.

Isn't the lochkeed f80 shooting star older? What about theF84? Are you talking about the oldest still flying or just the oldest period? The Messerschmidt ME260 or ME262 was flying about the end of 1944 It would have been operational sooner but Hitler wanted it to be a bomber and the Luftwaffe wanted a fighter Took a long time to settle that one but by the time it was the air war was pretty well finished. and the Luftwaffe lacked pilots and Germany lacked production facilities. And speaking of Sabres Jerry. We built CAC Sabres
at Fishermans Bend... about 25 miles from where
I live. Ours flew rings around the North American F86
thanks to the Roll Royce Avon power plants we
fitted instead of the GE:thumbup:

Roll Royce..

The first jet in combat operation was the ME262 which had a huge speed but could only operate for a short time.Had the Germans got it going 12 months earlier it would have caused a lot of problems.

and that was cause Hitler wanted it to be a bomber. The Luftwaffe wanted a fighter. And his concept of a bomber was that it was as fast as a fighter. To achieve that their prop powered bombers had light bomb loads and minimal defensive firepower compared to British and American Bombers. For an eye opening view on Luftwaffe strageties and tactics, read Adolf Galland's, "The first and Last" a Great book on the air war. Robin

On a purely personal note, being USAF EOD, the "oldest " aircraft crash I ever responded to, was a F-86 in the commissary parking lot on Osan AB, ROK.

Just arriving to work, being on standby one of our duties was morning coffee, the Crash Phone from Base Command Post rings off. A rather panic and bewildered voice reports of an F-86 crash at the Commissary Parking lot. I too was completely confused, just moments preiously having walk passed the commissary enroute to work. Hell, the EOD shop was in easily trot distance of the spot, and I heard no noise. I immediately responded, via foot.

Seemed that immediately after I passed the spot, thr ROKAF, were moving a static display F-86, and it slid off the roadway into the binjo ditch seperating the parking lot and the street. Listening into the Korean base radio, being less than fluent in Korean, the base command post went immediately into the "Oh Shit" mode.

No fatalities, limited damage to the Aircraft, major embarrassment, and 1 great war story.

I just couldn't help chuckling while reading your story. That's funny.

I used to live on an island off the west coast of Scotland (Isle of Lewis) and we had a saying that if you stand on Gallows Hill and see the mainland, it was going to rain, and if you couldn't see the mainland - it is raining.

I must agree about the a/c though. There are still meat-boxes flying, which pre-date '47. Not a bad bird for its age.
