D800 with Nikon 28-300 lense - Auto Focus failed.

I had the D800 and this lense for 2 years. It always works great until now, suddenly the auto Focus did not work? Is this the lense or Main D800? I checked the auto Focus menu and it's still intact , the lense ring just don't roll when I push haft way ? but works if I manually focus the ring?
Any ideas where I should check? or where I can bring my camera for checking? Help....please

Is it an AF-S lens? If it is then the focus motor is inside the lens, if it is AF-D then the focus motor is in the camera. MF-AF switch on lens set to AF?

Have you tried another lens to isolate the problem?

It could also be dirty contacts on the lens or in camera.

First you need to determine where the problem lies. Use a different lens, if the AF on that lens works you have a lens issue. If it does not, you may have a camera issue, be sure the battery is FULLY charged when doing this test to rule out low voltage problems. There are several good camera store in SF, so if you don't have a second lens I am sure there is someone in one of these store that would be glad to help you out.
The Nikon lenses all carry a 5 year warranty to the original purchaser. If you bought the lens new then you will be fully covered, no problems.

This is AF-S lense and I kept the lense very clean and bought originally from Ebay ( warranty for 3 years) and just out of warranty?) and I think it's the lense.... I have no l other lense to try now and will figure it out, but I'm sure it's the lense.. I still can use manual focus but that's i tough, if and want to give to someone to take picture of me?

Nikon USA lenses all have a 5 year USA Warranty. If you bought it off Ebay, and the "warranty" was for 3 years, then you bought a grey market lens and Nikon will not even work on it if you paid them here in the USA. The good possibility is, if you bought it WITH the D800, then that camera is less than 3 years old so your store warranty on the lens should still be valid.

How do I clean this lense, just for try to get the dirt out, if there is a dirt on it?
Could I use the air spray ( the one I bought to clean my PC desktop). Is this going to work?

Do not use air spray for PC on lens or camera. Use a bulb blower for cameras because the propellant in canned air spray can harm your camera.

To clean the contacts only--Take a Qtip and moisten one end with rubbing alcohol, squeeze to eliminate excess moisture. Carefully wipe the contact points with the damp Qtip. Dry the contacts with the dry end make sure there is no moisture remaining on the contacts.

Another thing to check is the focus lock on your camera. The first time I accidently did this I thought my camera or the lens was in need of repair. On your D800 this is the switch surrounding the selector button.

BTW, when the battery is on the last bar its time to charge it. Yeah it still works but not as well as 1/2 way.

Any chance you somehow activated Back Button Focus?? If so, the shutter button would NOT focus.

It's more than likely the lens. The AF motors can become misaligned and cease to function. This is a common problem with Nikon lenses but very repairable.

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the lens for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message or simply reply to this post.

Electronics supply stores sell a contact cleaner that doesn't leave a residue. You can use that to moisten a q-tip and gently wipe the contacts in the camera and the lens. If that doesn't cure the problem. Send the lens to Rick. He's a straight-shooter and will do a good job for you.
