Who exactly says Apple Aperture is not being supported.

Why are people saying Aperture is not being supported by Apple? I still get updates from Apple quite regularly. The most current one was Dec. 16th.
I really get tired with all these unsubstantiated rumours from people who are fanboys of competing products. Be it Apple, Canon, Nikon, etc.
It amazes me how critics try to show how they think know more than the companies that release.

The article says it will not develop new versions of Aperture but it still supports the current version with upgrades such as new Camera RAW for new cameras as they are released. You probably will not get the new holograph program as an upgrade when it is finally created. I believe Aperture (or a new named version) will continue for a long time to come. I'm not trying to start a rumour here but I bet if the day comes where Aperture becomes obsolete Apple will replace it free same as they have been doing with their last two operating systems.

Common sense tells me that few companies, Apple included, will continue to spend resources updating non revenue producing products. But as long as you don't update your gear or desire the newest and latest advances in software development - you should be ok.

Where you will find a problem is when you update or out of necessity replace your computer and try to load, via Time Machine, your prior version and find that it won't work - and it will not transfer ......and software downloads from Apple will be non existent. This will be a tough nut to swallow.

Keep in mind that your Aperture stored pictures, which have a unique storage management system, will be nearly impossible to resurrect...

Now a phone call to Apple posing the question "how can I get my pictures" will drive home the point that they no longer support the software.

Whether they do or they don't provide future hands on support - do you want to take that chance with your pictures?

Apple said so. People are just repeating what Apple said back in June.

No new version - no further development. The current version is the last. They may fix what is broken and release an update, but you won't see a new version.

Not a rumor, it is completely substantiated and common knowledge.

I will add that in spite of extremely good coverage of this piece of news, there are those that will persist living in denial of the facts, and criticize those who try to bring them up to date.

A similar situation has occurred with Nikon's Capture NX2. Nikon stopped supporting it six months ago. While it still works on my current computer, if I upgrade or have a hardware failure, it simply will not work with the newer OS, and all my edited files will be unreadable. So, I've been busy converting my best images to TIFFs or JPGs while NX2 still works and then importing original RAW files to Lightroom. I'm afraid you'll also have to prepare for the inevitable. I would get started while your Aperture program is still functional. It looks like Adobe has won the photo editing software war.

Don't forget Apple is working on another photo app to be released sometime after the first of th year. We don't know about its capabilities and how they plan for migration from iPhoto and Aperture to the new app. I think it is too early to write off Apple and throw in the towel.

Apple did not say they are discontinuing Aperture, only that they are not going to add further upgrades to it.
I plan to keep using it. The Photos app they are changing to only runs on Mavericks OS which I don't plan to switch to either.

"Apple also said it is working with Adobe to help users transition to its Lightroom app for Mac."

Yep, Aperture will work....until it doesn't. Then what?

Why would it stop working ??
There is no self destruct timer in it.
I plan to keep using it until I stop.

I don't understand it either. Apple still supports Aperture and iPhoto and will continue to do so throughout Yosemite's run. I think you hit the nail on the head when you speak of fanboys pushing pushing the brands/programs they use.
For me, I'm still using Aperture and will continue to do so until Photos come out and I can see what it offers and if I (then) need to move to LightRoom or some other such program.

Well, before that point you could take your current machine and convert it to a VMWare Fusion virtual machine and run that on any future Mac until VMWare decides to stop developing its software or you pass away. You're kind of stuck in time but it gives you the option of upgrading the OS in a new Mac to your hearts content and getting new Macs but still having your old incompatible programs running and accessible. So make up a Snow Leopard virtual machine and you still have all those wonderful "power pc" programs still available.

Got a question for your Big Bear....if you go to switch on your computer and it doesn't boot. What next? Even if your libraries are on a different drive - how are going to read them?

Apple has already announced the new "Photo" will be designed to access both Aperture and iPhoto. Your assessment is unfounded according to Apple. Typically Apple will wait and bring out a new photography based application that will make people remember that Photoshop was and is a designer's tool.
