Put 910 on remote and D810 on commander mode.
Or set 910 to fire when it sees a flash.
Or you could buy an 18" hot-shoe extension cord and L bracket.
The instruction manual has 130 pages of good information.

I know others will be able to offer you much more help than I can but are you talking about using it wirelessly to be set off by another flash unit or just with an attachment cord to maybe have the camera on a tripod while you hold the flash in your hand above the subject?

I was wanting to use the 910 as a second light source instead of a studio type light

Put 910 on remote and D810 on commander mode.

oldtigger's got it right.

This site should be helpful with setting up the camera in commander mode:
http://masteryournikon.com/2013/01/17/understanding-nikons-flash-commander-mode/
I do it all the time.
Works great! I even use it outside.
You can use TTL exposure or manually set the flash power from your camera.
(You don't need no stinkin' cords.)

Check the link below to my photos.
The photo of the kids getting into the Christmas present was done with 2 speedlights controlled by the pop-up flash set to commander mode.

Now you can really get creative!
If you haven't already checked them out, go to the Strobist Website or Neil van Niekirk's website for some great tips.
Cheers!

Nikon's system relies on line of sight, short distance infrared communication and can be a bit dodgy in high ambient light.

The best way is to use a set of radio triggers, Pocket Wizards are pretty much the pro standard but there are many other low cost systems that offer similar features and performance like the Yongnuo YN622N

how far off camera? 10 inches? 4 feet? 40 feet?

33 Ft between Master and remote. Probably less if there is a high ambient light level.

Pocket Wizards will trigger over a much greater distance - probably 300.m, and the Yongnuo 622 will trigger over 100m.

I'm sure your combination of camera/flash is very similar to my D700/SB-800. Remote setting on the flash, commander mode on the camera. It's pretty simple and probably spelled out in either the manuals, or a video on youtube.

The manual that came with the flash will tell you how to do it i use 3 SD 800S and use the on camera flash to fire the SB 800 S ,if you don't want to use the on camera flash you can still use it bye putting a reflect card in front of the camera flash on a angle and it will fire the flash
