Is it ok to buy used lens from Amazon.com?
I know many of you recommend KEH for used equipment. I'm looking for a Tamron 24-70 2.8 for Nikon d7100. The only places I have found one were Amazon and eBay. I know the adage , "Buyer Beware", and am skeptical. Amazon has several " like new" for $800-900 range. Is it safe to buy from them if the seller has a great rating? What about ones shipped from Hong Kong and Japan? Some are shipped from USA. Advice..... experiences?
I have purchased second hand from the Amazon store. No problem. Probably would not buy from overseas

Thanks, Mike. If I can find good used lenses, I can buy two I'd like to have for the price of one new one. Just don't want to throw my money away if it's not a good one.
yes, double-check buyer isn't overseas. That doesn't mean they'll necessarily rip you off, but it will take a l-o-n-g time for shipment to arrive. Otherwise, I've had no complaints with Amazon, and returning items is a breeze
Safety is a range of margin.
100% comes with new from B&H or Adorama with great customer service, 30 day satisfaction or return, the factory warranty and the option for an extended warranty. The emphasis should be on the 30 day satisfaction guarantee. It is so good that they seem to love you when you send something back.
My view is that Amazon is probably 98% for anything sold by Amazon. That is only a 2% hit. It is because there are so many warehouses and so many employees that an error rate is inevitable.
Maybe 95% for "sold by xxxxx, Fulfilled by Amazon". My wife got a sewing machine accessory from this catagory yesterday. It was not what she ordered!
Maybe 90% if sold by and shipped by a third party, but through Amazon. I bought a flashlight from this catagory and I kept it, but it did not have all the features listed in the description written by the third party.
Maybe 80% if it is third party supplied, shipped and used.
Maybe 70% if third party supplied and shipped from overseas.
I buy a lot of routine stuff from Amazon. It is a great place to spend money. Nothing ever seems to go wrong with anything sold and shipped by Amazon themselves.

I've bought a few things from Hong Kong, brand new from companies that had been in business for several years. Huge savings and I got the stuff sometimes faster than I did when ordering from the states, but to be safe, on my one expensive item (I think it was one of my lenses) I went ahead and purchased the "Square Trade" insurance. Never had any problem with the equipment yet. Packaging and product looked like it would have come right from the original factory and it probably did. Don't remember if these were on Amazon or E-Bay, though. Most of my buying is from B&H or Adorama.
I have bought all my camera gear (6 cameras, 10 lens) for the last 7 years from Amazon.com. I look for the items that are listed as "Used - Like New", and I sometimes wait for a few months, waiting for the price to come down. You'd be amazed as the deals you can get when someone wants to make some quick cash - usually, its a gift someone has given them, so they are ready to part with if for a very reasonable price, even though some of the stuff was brand new. I typically save about 20% off the cost of Retail.

ebay has got a buyer's protection pol. going, ifs it not what seller said it was...you got your money back, been dealing with ebay over 16years now
I have been an Amazon Prime member for several years. I started doing it when I was still teaching and would buy books and liked the free shipping. Each year I know I save more in shipping than I do for the membership. And I do watch Amazon movies.
Given that, I only buy equipment from reliable dealers or from Amazon directly. I purchased my last Nikon lens, new though Amazon. I do use KEH for refurbished stuff though. That I think is safer. But it all depends on the best deal. eBay is fine, I just don't like going through the bidding.
i'm sure i'm not the only one who has had good luck with ebay or amazon. I bought two lenses, one from japan one from the usa, in both cases I was happy with what I got.
I bought a "like new" lens on Amazon that came with the 5 year warranty. Also if you have a problem with an Amazon purchase they will do everything possible to make it right.

My mom clerks cd with Amazon has always been good. When I had a problem with non- delivery, Amazon quickly cancelled the transaction and put the money back in my CC
I have bought both used and foreign new items through Amazon without any issues at all. In fact, some foreign items arrived astonishingly quickly.
I also strongly recommend e-bay, just be sure the shipper has a strong approval rating (99-100%).
Check warranties as well. Olympus' world-wide warranty policy has just changed.
