Bit of a guess here, I think you are speaking of the four buttons on the bottom of the Synchronise Settings panel.
Check all means every check box in the panel gets a tick
Check None means every check box is unticked.
Synchronise means that only the checked items in the dialogue will be applied to the images.
Suppose I altered Exposure, Saturation and Clarity on the first image, then wanted only the Saturation to be synched to other images, I would Uncheck All, then check the Saturation box, then click Synchronise.
