In reality, what varies between a professional photographer and amateur photographer is a business card. There are a myriad superior amateur photographers out there.
Consider this true account from a photography class I taught at the local college
Upon introductions, one of my students proclaimed herself as a "professional photographer" During the one the first assignments, "depth of field" she announces that her Canon camera would not do that. Another student in class with the identical camera noted she had no trouble with her camera. At that point the "professional" commented "...well that must be something amateurs can do"
