I love the 18-140mm Nikkor. In October I took it along with my Nikon D5300 and took about 500 photos with it in Hong Kong. There are a number of tight places in crowded Hong Kong. The photos I obtained were incredibly crisp and clear. I love the lens. I like it so much I bought a used one from KEH.com just so I would have one to keep on my IR modified Nikon D80. LifePixel.com does a wonderful conversion job to IR.

That is encouraging.....thank you. KEH is where I will buy mine.

From all the reviews that I've read it seems to be a very highly regarded lens. I've been thinking of getting one myself. I have an 18-55 and a 55-300, and would like something in the middle range.

SOunds good to me Erik! Thanks for your reply.

That should work. Let me suggest that for shaky hand holding I take a fighter's stance (right-handed), pull the camera into my left shoulder, cup my left hand under the lens - sorta covering my right hand and shoot left eyed. It will amaze you with how still you can be. I am 72 and all my lenses are heavy but this works great for me. Good luck young man.

Yes, the fighter's stance is something I learned years go and you are right, it does help a lot. Thanks David!

That lens is bundled with the D7100 sometimes and gets good reviews. I second David Pine's suggestion. Here is a link to several pros showing you how to hold your camera steady and how to breath properly. You need to pretend you're a sniper to do some of these poses, but they all make sense.
Good luck, I'm 62 and these tips have helped me to not spend nearly so much time on the tripod.

Thank you for the advice.

Not to get off the subject, but is that a Les Paul bass you have in your avatar?

No, it's a Gretsch Electromatic short scale. It has seen many gigs and now is retired and hanging on my living room wall.

ditto on the shaky hand held. I too shake, I mostly use a monopod, but I still get some shake. I shoot sony so I turn on the in cameras anti- shake or up the shutter speed.

Thanks bull drink water. I have also tried a monopod and it does help some.

You might want to check what DXOMark and dpreview have to say about it.

Nikon continues to improve their VR. More recent issue lenses have more recent updates to the VR. Some Nikon lenses are "tripod aware" and change the algorithm that controls VR after self-detecting that the camera is likely on a tripod.

No clue where your specific lens request stands in this regard. But if the design was released more than a couple of years ago it won't have the latest VR.

Thanks much MtnMan. From what I understand, this is a fairly new lens so maybe the VR is pretty good. I'm not sure what active VR does, but this lens does not have it.

You might find a monopod to be helpful. Even with IS or VR, some of my photos are just not sharp. I have found the monopod to be a great compromise. Unlike a tripod, there is little set up time required. I even use it with my sigma 150 -500 with good results. I set the IS to mode 1 with the monopod.

I don't think you're getting old, you just want a good excuse to buy a fancy present. For maxim versatility I think I would get a strong monopod one that can be used for a walking stik. Learn how to use it spreading ur legs and using it for the third leg. Next problem is training. Get a laser pointer to use it as a marker. Using tape that doesn't leave residue tape it to the camera. Practice using various holds until UR satisfied you can hold the dot on a spot with ur largest or most difficult to hold lens. You will be happy you did.

I actually have Essentil Tremor which is a hereditary ailment that causes muscles to shake especially when under tension. I've been using Canon and Tamron image stabilized lenses for years. Shoot mainly hand held or with a monopod because i love to shoot birds in our local wetlands. I bought a Canon Rebel SL1 which is the smallest and lightest true SLR and recently paired it with a Tamron 16-300 VC lens. That gives me roughly 24-450 with the APC sensor. Rig weighs 2lbs 1 oz. Love it! Comments about holding the camera are right on target. Relax and squeeze that shutter button.
