Check out this topic of mine re handy advanced smaller camera to use. You mentioned the Fuji X30 and based upon the comments and my needs (112 max zoom is OK) I just bought the Fuji X30 from B&H. Coming today.

"Should I buy a Fujifilm X30 or an Olympus Stylus 1?"

My husband's Canon Power-Shot G5 finally sputtered to a crawl & I want to get him a decent camera that is not too complicated. I was all set to order the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX300 until I read a review that it is VERY slow writing to the card (even a fast card didn't help). That makes it dead in the water if you constantly have to wait to take another picture. The more I researched, the more confused I got. Now I'm leaning towards a Fujifilm X30. He doesn't care about making a movie or sending a pic to social media, but he is 74 and I don't know if I have the patience or time to teach him anything too complicated.

My other option is to give him my Nikon D5000 and get a Nikon D7100 or even A D610 for myself...hmmm. The reviews for Nikon Cool Pix P&S aren't that great. I considered the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX 100, but at a $900 pricetag, I could buy the D7100!!!!

So... I've thrown out 4 options: Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, or my "old" Nikon. Please, I need advice!

He had a G5, get him G15 or G16, odds are it will be a hit, would work for me , of course I have one already, nice replacement for my G7, Bob.

Steve, the FZ 1000 is $800 used, $900 new.

I think the G 16 is a great choice and at $450, well within the budget.

We're pretty much recommending the FZ200 or even the FZ79. The FZ200, however, can maintain an f2.8 throughout the focal range. Another advantage of the Lumix cameras is a Leica lens.

When I go to Europe, I will be taking one of the Panasonic cameras rather than drag all my heavy equipment.

Now that the Canon SX-60 is out, you can probably pick up a great deal on the SX-50, which in my opinion would do all you suggest and more. Hubby can use it strictly on AUTO, or a good variety of other manual choices. Great camera with a tremendous zoom (50X). Sold new around $400.00 but should be considerably less now.

For your budget, the best value IMO, is the Nikon D3300.

Since your husband liked his Canon G5, maybe he would like the newer G15 or the SX60.
I have a G11 that is my walk around camera. It doesn't have the Super Zoom that some of the other cameras have but I still love this camera.

though i still shoot Canon, i love the Fujifilm 100s. the price is a little more than you mentioned ($1200) but the results are fantastic. FF has just released its 100T, so you will get a good sale price on the 100s. you might also check B&H for used equipment. the camera is a fixed 38mm lens, but tact sharp. i use the 100s for landscapes and close up shots. just shot a wedding reception with both my Canon 5D2 and the FF. the candid shots with the FF were fantastic. good shopping.

B&H has the Panasonic fz 1000 for $900 and the fz 200 for $600. The 1000 is way out of my price range but both cameras seem very nice. The worst thing said about it is that it has a lousy manual. I can live with that. I'll just have hubby watch some You Tube videos! Have you actually seen the 200 for $300? If so, where?

I am 73 and getting back into the finer elements of photography. I went through selection of new camera the past 5 months. I had worked my selection down to the SX50 and the FZ200.
I decided best for me was a FZ200 and ordered from B&H last week for $297.99 at the end of Black Friday specials. It was just delivered last night. So is not on reduced price right now. You might want to watch and see what happens to be on sale.
I did get a online add from Canon for factory refurbished SX 50 for I think was $200. If I find the link again I will post it out here. Good luck.

G16 or SX50 for all the reasons stated by so many so far. Think it is time to go out and hold a few and see. The G16 is lighter. While the G16 sensor is smaller, the lens is mcuh faster. If the G16 is comfortable, go with it.

I am a Nikon guy, but for your husband, already familiar with a Canon P&S layout, I recommend considering a Canon SX-50:

or the newer Canon SX-60:

I'm inclined to agree with Nikonian on the SX50 Hs. It's available through today for $199 from Canon as a factory refurb

Canon SX 50 or SX 60. For a dslr, the Canon SL1 is a great buy.
