Depth of field is rather narrow, but in the zone of focus I would rate it 4.5.

Most of it is in focus. What is f 0?

It is Tack sharp-look at the eyes, eyebrow, white beard and skin. You can see the detail in the paint, including flaws. By the time you get to the tip of the nose the shallow DOF leaves it softer, the hands more so, but this is a DOF issue, not a sharpness one.If the ISO was increased from 100 to 400 you could stop the lens down 2 stops for increased DOF at the same shutter speed and you would be happier with your result.

f 0 and 0mm is what I get when my camera doesn't recognize the lens.

The lens was an older (manual focus) 105mm f/2.5 prime, shot handheld from 3 to 4 ft.

Being sort of new to photography ( April 2014 ) I new it was sharp,
but wanted more experienced here to give me opinions on how sharp.

So thanks to all for the replies.

@romanticf16
Thanks for the advice on DOF issue.
It's adjustments like that to ISO and f stops that I need to keep in mind.

dannac, some areas are really sharp but then others are not and I think that is what is taking away from the overall photo. There is quite a bit a play with shadows, maybe if the shadows were in the less sharp plane it would help emphasize the more sharper areas. Thanks for the post, it gives me something to think about in my own work.

May I suggest that traditionally one would want to use a well lit flat target with fine lines on it as opposed to a 3 dimensional object that introduces the potential for a dof and shadow issue. There are any number of photo targets you can download, print, hang on a wall or fence, etc., to check for lens sharpness.

I keep a crisp new $1 bill taped to a wall for this. Lots of detail and fine lines. :-D
I used a $20 until someone stole it. :cry:
