Here are a few from last years trip to Snake Road. Snakes are one of those hard to shoot animals. They are fast and long and hard to get all in focus at one time. For this Rough Green Snake I tried a few angle, f-stops, and focus points. All three pics were shot with a 90mm Tamron macro lens. Hope you like.

Semi-close picture of snake but could not get all of it in focus.

This last shot I slightly changed the f-stop and isolated his head focusing on his eye. The result is his head was the onlything in focus.

Welcome to Day 69 :) Today we are going to take another look at Aperture (part 2).. To be exact it is Focal Length, Aperture, and Shooting distance. How the three combine to affect Depth of Field.
Depth of field is described as the amount of distance between the closest and farthest objects in a photograph that appear in acceptably sharp focus.
Whether you have a shallow depth of field or a deep depth of field .. is a personal choice and can be quite subjective. What appeals to you might not appeal to another
photographer. You will never be able to please everybody, so the very best choice is the one that appeals to you.
There are a few factors that have a direct relationship with depth of field.. but we are only going to look at 3 of them today. Those are Aperture ,Focal Length, and Shooting distance.
We know that the aperture affects the amount of light that hits the sensors. So the larger the aperture (smaller fstop number) the bigger the opening .. the more light gets in.
The smaller the aperture (larger fstop number) the smaller the opening .. the less light gets in.
Light goes down in intensity the further it has to travel. So the light at the end of a longer lens is less intense than the light at the end of a shorter lens.
For example: If everything else stays the same ... the fstop and focal length (distance to the subject).. the light will be more intense on a 28mm lens than it is on a 50mm lens.
Less distance to travel. Last month we learned how to adjust the light using exposure compensation. This month we learn you can also adjust the light using the aperture
and focal length of the lens in combination. Both along with the distance to the subject affect the depth of field in your photograph.
I'm sure all this seems overwhelming.. but it's the best way for me to explain it and not include math LOL.
So for today's challenge ... just experiment ... shoot any subject you wish.. keeping 2 of the 3 factors the same and only changing the other one. (Aperture, Focal length, Shooting distance)

This first photo is a quick reference guide. The others are examples of the same shooting distance and aperture .. the only difference is the focal length of the lens.

I look forward to seeing what y'all come up with.

Hello, I wish I didnt have to ask this question, but I couldnt figure it out yesterday or today.
How do I set the aperture priority?
My camera is a Fuji S4000.
I have a dial on top with sp, srauto, camera picture, p, s, a, m, c, video, and panarama. I also have a separate button on top that has an "f" on it.

So where do I put my dial?

If I put it on A, and push the middle button that gives me the menu, then I get ISO, image size, image quality, finepixcolor, white balance, sharpness and face recognition.

So, I am not quite sure yet, how to set it to experiment for taking pictures. Can you help me with that?
Thanks,
Nita

Truly awesome shots! Yikes ~ like most people I am deathly scared of snakes, so I get a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach thinking about you taking the pictures! (pg. 2)

P2. I could be wrong, but it looks like shutter speed changed to compensate for change in Aperture. But what was your focal length. Doesn't look like it changed too much. So 2 of the 3 things changed. I believe we are only supposed to change 1 of the 3. I am going to try picking something closer to foreground to focus on - like f stops examples - and change my focal length. I need to keep reading, but that might be what happened. There, have I confused the whole thing sufficiently? The snakes are good examples too.

It's dreary and raining in GA today, so I tried an experiment on the front porch with an artificial dogwood arrangement. Shot from same distance, and focal point with different focal lengths. (55 - 200mm lens) The focal point is the 2nd larger leaf on right of main stem. Straight from the camera. Somebody please speak up if I've got this all wrong!

F4, ISO 100 - focal length: 55mm
F4, ISO 100 - focal length: 55mm...

F4, ISO 100 - focal length: 105mm
F4, ISO 100 - focal length: 105mm...

F4, ISO 100 - focal length- 200mm

p2 Nita, do you still have your camera manual? I would suggest seeing what info you might find in it. If you don't have it, you could "google" your model and probably look at a manual on line.
