I bought a Canon 1.4 USM lens off of ebay, the seller said it
had focusing problems, for the price I took a chance. Sure enough it had problems focusing, I cleaned the contacts
real good, I had me a perfect lens and it looks like new.

That was done on both my T3i and 60D. Canon did admit it needed repair.

Since you didn't mention the vendor, I would assume it is not Adorama, Cameta, B&H, KEH or Amazon. I have purchased "factory refurbished" cameras, projectors, lenses or flashes from each of those. Never had a problem.

Since you are beyond the return period, if you want good repair, you can send it to C.R.I.S. in Arizona. They have repaired several lenses for me. They are authorized repair for many brands and have the latest testbench equipment. You send them the lens. They call or email you with a firm estimate. (Which, in each case, was very reasonable.) You authorize the repair or tell them to return it to you. Each time I have done this, they have performed admirably.

Sorry for your misery.

Thanks for that info, I'll keep it. Right now the warranty is still good. So----

I'll join the repliers who have had nothing but good luck with Canon service. My 70D and SW50 were both refurbs. I have also purchased a couple S100 when they were deep discounted. The 70D had dust on the focus screen that didn't affect exposures. Canon took care of it and I had it back in about a week. I join a previous replier who suggested providing as much detail as possible in describing your issue with the lens. Good luck.

I got a refurbished 24-105, but I bought through Adorama, and it is now over a year with me, and excellent. I am sorry to hear about your problem.

I purchased a refurb lens from Canon and it works perfectly. I always thought a refurb was better because Canon would go through it with a fine toothed comb and you would have something equal or better than a new one because it would be tested by high standards. After reading all reply's if I purchase another I will test it immediately.

Sorry you are having the problem and I agree that you need to be very specific about the problem when talking with a tech. I have had very good response from Canon. Have purchased a refurb lens, have had repair done to my camera and a tech even helped me figure out a problem that was my stupidity, yet walked me through it very patiently. I would call and ask to talk with a supervisor. The equipment I have bought from them, including the lens, had a one year warranty, just like the new equipment. Maybe the two weeks is a return policy, but you should still have the one year warranty. Go for a supervisor.

Hi All: Need a little advice from someone that has some experience with similar problem. Bought a refurb 50 1.4 from Canon that did not focus correctly and sometimes refused to even try. Unfortunately I waited after the 2 week return policy was over to even give it a try. My fault. Sent it back to them to correct. When it came back everything was blurry. Sent it back again. At this time I was told that most of their refurbs were actually returns from various Camera Shops and weren't refurbished at all. To me that's very deceptive and false advertisement. It is now back for the third time. I am burned out on it. Canon should realize it's a real "dud" by now and keep the piece of junk and do something about making this right. That is not the case. I am now waiting for the 3rd time for it to come back. I have no reason to feel confidence in them or their repairs. I have expressed this to them to no avail. Hopefully they will realize it's time to do the right thing. Any advice? Thanks

I have had nothing but great experience with Canon service. All of the refurbished thing that I have bought have been from Canon direct. I would hover buy from a reputable dealer. I agree with MT that you need to be communicate exactly what the problem is, both verbally and in written and with digital and had copy of image.

If I want to be pissed-off that is my choice. Canon was the first company to retail their refurbished goods with a one year warranty.

I have let things slip thru the cracks not testing new gear at once. If return privilege is lost it's on me.

It is disheartening and I am sorry that you have had a problem. J. R.

If all else PM with prices. I will give you what you think their worth.

I think you might have gotten a dud or maybe your contacts just need cleaning as mentioned by others. I really doubt you would have gotten better service from Nikon. They have an "F" rating with the BBB while Canon has an "A". That has been my personal experience and I will never buy a Nikon product again. I have bought 4 Canon refurbs over the years and all worked well.

Well, I guess I fall in the other 20%. Wish I didn't. I just will never give them an opportunity to do this again. Unfortunately I have 3 Canons, an Xti, T3i and a 60D. I am seriously considering selling them.

Well your name is Murphy....

I'm sorry, but anytime I see the name "Murphy" I think of "Murphy's Law."

That sucks about your lens.
Hope they make it right for you.

Yes, I know and that was my fault and I accept that. I should have read the "fine print" but my goodness it's been there 2 and now 3 times. That's very discouraging and now just can't feel good about that lens. I am hoping they decide to let me either get a different lens as I know they don't reimburse which I wish they did because I would like to have a 50 1.4 but not a Canon one, since I made the mistake of not reading reviews. Since this problem I have and found that a lot of them have these focusing problems. Granted initially I made the mistake of not checking it out and getting it back to them in the 2 weeks. I would really like to feel more confidence in them. That's hard to do when you find out these are not refurbs but just returned. I really didn't like that because it makes you think they were checked out and everything is A-Okay. Not so. Just really discouraged with both them and the lens. I really made the mistake of not even worrying about it. Too much trust really. Well, hopefully they do the right thing. We'll see and I will let you know. No one should have to send a bad lens back 3 times. That's just not right.

That was my mistake too! I will never make that mistake again. That was my fault. But it really bothered me to find out that it wasn't refurbished and a just a return. Never would have expected that from Canon. Live and Learn!

Yes, I do have the one year warranty but so far they have insisted it be returned for repair. But, 3 times! Real discouraged. Have talked to Supervisors each time. So far to no avail. Hopefully, this time! I'll let you know.

I made the mistake of believing that too. So Yes, don't delay! My mistake but 3 times back??? Am hoping they offer to do something about it and don't just send the darn thing back again. Burned out at with it at this point!
