Look at a bridge camera. Go to see and feel before you buy.
I can only suggest
Panasonic with F2.8 throughout [not sure of model]
Canon SX50
Sony HX200V
All have manual override.

There are so many more. This is why you should review my and other suggestions online.

Canon Power Shot SX50 or the Panasonic Lumix FZ 200. They will both do the job. I lean toward the Canon for the stated use due to zoom and lower noise.

I agree. I have the canon sx50 and really enjoy it. There will be a learning curve with it, depending on her experience. (It was my first Canon after using Nikon dslr for a few years) Had an older version of the Panasonic FZ200 and it took great pictures and was very easy to use.

What camera would you recommend that has a SLR type body and the longest zoom for $300 to $400? It's for someone that needs a camera for taking all types of pictures without changing lenses. Thanks

I recommend the canon sx50

This would be a great choice.

David,

You've already seen how many folks on UHH are recommending the Canon SX50. I will, too, and here is Canon's website telling you all about it. And, by the way, don't pay attention to the price listed on the site because that is what Canon charged when the SX50 was first introduced. Also, pay particular attention to all the links down the right side of the page, "The Power of a Shot," "Canon Advantage Powershot," and so forth. Great information there!

You can Google places to buy the SX50 at less than what Canon advertises. And, now, I'll throw in a curveball. Canon just introduced the new SX60 and, quite frankly, it's getting a LOT of good press...but it's about $100.00 more. It would be up to you to decide if the additional expense would be worth it. Here's the link for it:

I just went through this thought process over the past 3 months basically having narrowed my choices down to the Canon SX50 and the Panasonic FZ200 by Nov. 30th.
In my case, to suit my needs and performance wants, I ended up choosing the FZ200. I ordered it last night from B&H Photo Video for $297.99. Due Friday the 5th.

Ditto the Canon SX50 and the Panasonic FZ200.
I think the Panny will provide the best value and the best results.

Look at the Nikon D3100 and a Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Nikkor Lens. US $389.00

Or a Canon SX50 or one of the similar "bridge" cameras. MANY to choose from!

You know I have been looking at tons of photos from different models of bridge cameras from all the brands from 500PX and Flickr. I have found for myself that this Canon SX50 has the best image quality of all of them. Do you find this to be so in your opinion as well?

OK. I am going out on a limb here. But has anyone suggested the SX50?

I think this is the closest to consensus I have seen on a thread here.

I found this site comparing the Canon vs Nikon in which the Canon won: http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-PowerShot-SX50-HS-vs-Nikon-Coolpix-P520

Looking at the pricing at Amazon, they seem comparable. I have a Nikon 830. I am happy with it except for the lack of a sighting viewer. You have to be able to see the screen in the back of the camera to know what you are shooting. I believe the Canon 50 and Nikon 520 both have sights on them. Best of Luck,
Ted

He's in the range of a Nikon D3100 or a Canon T2i with a long DX Telephoto Lens.

Hi David,

I recommend that you go to dpreview.com. They have a buyers guide section that lets you select the parameters that you want in a camera. I'm including a link to that site. I have put in SLR-like, 8 to 18mp and the reseults returned 90 cameras with that description. All you have to do is look through the list and find one that meets your price criteria.

http://www.dpreview.com/products/search/cameras#criterias=SpecsCoreParams%2CSpecsEffectivePixels%2CSpecsZoomTele¶mSpecsCoreParamsBodyType=SLRLikeCompact¶mSpecsEffectivePixelsMin=8¶mSpecsEffectivePixelsMax=18¶mSpecsZoomTele=200%2B

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tim

P.S. I know that's a lot of cameras but I wanted to be thorough. :)
