Taking the ultimate 'wonder-vacation' at the end of the month. I don't plan to take my DSLR and lenses, but want a little higher quality than my old Canon A1100. HELP? Is the Sony RX100 Mark III worth the money? Panasonic/Lumix ZS40 a strong option? I really don't see my prints going beyond my computer.....

I have used the LUMIX zs40 since August....took it to altitudes, mountain hiking, etc........its a great camera with excellent IQ, zoom, etc.
Its very small and light (spent most time in my pocket). I am at best a novice and I have blown up some of the pics to 16x20 and they are quite clear.

Had the sony rx 100. Didn't like the camera or the pix. Went for the panasonic zs35 (now 40) for travel. Really excellent. Good zoom, sharp, easy to use, pocketable and reasonable price. Took it to alaska and got great whale pix. And utah for beautiful mountains. Good choice. Good luck.

Tanks for the comments. Did you feel the zoom was enough? Some of the Canon cameras have 20+ power.

The Sony RX100 III has gotten very good reviews from both professional reviewers and users. My problem with it is that the 24-70mm lens isn't long enough for a lot of situations. If I was to travel without a DSLR I'd bring my Nikon P7800 compact. It has a very sharp 18-200 f/2-4 lens, a 1/1.7 inch sensor, an EVF (electronic viewfinder), and a hotshoe. I have a very small Nikon sb-300 flash that I use for bounce flash with it. The 18-200 lens covers a lot of ground. The f/2-4 lens and the 1/1.7 inch sensor make it relatively good in low light for a compact. It's a little big for a compact, but it fits in a jacket pocket, the leg pockets of my cargo pants, and a belt case.
