Here is behind St Lewis Cathedral I took a few years ago. Take the fee ferry over to Algiers and go to Kern's Mardi Gras World. They make many of the Mardi Gras floats.

To be honest, I've never felt unsafe with any of my gear in the Quarter, though I wouldn't ramble about in the cemeteries after dark. I go to the city 5-6 times a year, me and my trusty EM1 just got back today from a 5 day stay and it's great right now, temps are moderate and crowds are small. Jackson Square is looking great with fall colors and the red Christmas bows. Good street photo ops all around Jackson Square, at Cafe du Monde, in French Market, up and down Royal where lots of the mimes and musicians hang out. Go up on the levee behind Decatur to shoot down on Jackson Square - great shots from there. Bourbon gets crowded and silly so I seldom go there at night but Decatur, Royal, and the Saints sts are fun. I like going into the Quarter at dawn to watch the old city wake up - all kinds of characters and wonderful light. If you have free daytime, get a day ticket and take the street car up to Carrollton and back, get off and on as much as you want to take photos of the grand old uptown architecture. If you have enough free daytime, take a cemetery tour or even a swamp/plantation tour - great photo ops on them, and the sugar cane harvest is in full swing. Operators pick up at all hotels. Ask if you have particular questions about the city or interests, there's several of us who know it pretty well and a couple who live there.

minniev, I'm from N.O., years ago. My entire family left after Katrina. I, also have the E-M1 now. I would love to see your photos. You seem to have captured the places I would go back to with a camera. Do you have a Flickr page?

Jackson Square area architecture, artists, street performers. Be sure to tip the street performers.

Truthfully, put the images on the back burner and just spend your free time at the Acme Oyster House raw bar! :-P

No web presence though its on my intention list to develop one after Christmas. I have posted several on UHH critique section, though, you might can tell by titles if you look at topics I've started from my profile page. Will be posing some new ones once I survive Thanksgiving, from New Orleans and the Lake Martin area. Katrina scarred the city and changed it forever, but in ways it seems stronger. What's been happening in the old CBD is nothing short of amazing.

Definitely include Acme or Felixes, but take the camera. A working oyster shucker is a great photo op.

Garden District, Zoo, Aquarium, Bourbon Street, of course, down at the river. Tulane has a beautiful campus.

I have spent a few days there myself. Bourbon Street is OK but do some of the side streets, the street performers, and don't miss Jackson Square. There are local artists, palm readers, and lots of local color. Be sure and look at the windows, doors, balconies and the small things that make that city what it is.

We did bourbon st last time we were there...a neat experience, but I didn't feel all that safe pulling out my point and shoot (work camera), let alone using my gear. I'm hoping to find something a little less touristy.

We've been there twice- once pre Katrina, and once After. Did lots of walks with a DSLR and backpack of glass- no issues. The Botanical Gardens might still have some blooms left. The Float Warehose for MardiGras is an interesting tour- right on the waterfront. The St. Charles Trolly thru Midtown.

Cafe Du Monde. The whole area for a few blocks in any direction around the cafe is a photo op. Rememeber to keep the lens cap on and otherwise protect your gear when eating a beignet. The sugar can go everywhere. And you MUST eat them with the sugar.
