Personally I think that Nicaragua is facing a huge potential environmental disaster when they breach that huge freshwater lake. I am willing to bet that a lot of money changed hands under the table. La Mordida rules in Latin America. :hunf: :XD: :XD:

Through the decades I've heard a lot of talk about an alternative to the Panama Canal....some as far North as Mexico....none have gone beyond the talk stage, just like this one which is a preliminary project that saw the light of day just last year according to the article.
I don't know how Washington will view the digging of another big trench .....by the Chinese, no less!!!
I know one thing....if this was part of the US nobody would even dream of talking about something like this.....hell we can't even build a pipeline from Canada anymore !

I think you're correct in your concern about a potential disaster when salt water is introduced into Lake Nicaragua from both oceans! But then again, you can't see a problem with the canal from China, just saying.

Lots of land to dig up. Recall that the French first tried to dig the Panama Canal and they ran out of money.

I see the problem with China. They have been investing more and more into not only Latin America but other parts of the world including the USA. They have and will continue to flex their economic strength. In this article I was more concerned about the ecological situation. :(

Funny, I remember when Japan was buying everything up and building everything and was going to be bigger than the US economy!

What happened?

Good question. Check the following article out. I just read another article which stated that China has now surpassed the the USA as the world's largest economy.

I agree. the ecological consequences are considerable. China has its eyes on maintaing its Western market quick access if Panama canal ever becomes unavailable to them. That is part of the economic cold war going now.

I would ignore economy figures. In absolute terms China's economy is the largest, but its population is at least three times as large as USA's, so in per capita terms China's economy is one third that of USA. They have a long way to go.

I don't think it will be built. China just spent a gazillion "$" in bribes and pre construction on a mammoth- 400 hectors- project (Dragon Mart) just south of Cancun and it has finally been shut down for environmental violations.

I hope that you are right. If they pursue it, it will be an environmental disaster of epic proportions. :(
