I'm trying to find the best app to control my Nikon D810 from either my android smart phone or my android tablet.
I've tried both Helicon and Smart Shooter 3. Helicon works on my tablet but not my phone. Smart Shooter has limited controls. Please tell me what works for you. Thanks.

Most of us just use verbal training for the Nikon D800 series of cameras. Mine has been under control since the day I bought it. But there are times when she just doesn't seem to want to behave. On those days I just put her back in the case and use the D7000 instead.

Good answer. Thanks Dennis. I agree, but that's not what I had in mind.

I know but I am in a jovial mood today and couldn't resist the urge to spread some cheer. Have a great day and may wonderful things be heading your way.

I occasionally tape a cable release to my phone, its all I can afford.

I went very high tech after using my Smarter-than-me-phone as a release.
I got one of these new newfangled high tech stand alone for my camera use.

Here's a link:

It admittedly might be a bit too advanced for a D810 though... :hunf:

I use "qDslrDashboard" to control my D600 thru wifi(Nikon WU-1B) with my Iphone5. Still a little buggy and I don't know if it work with D810. But it's cheap and look promising.

here's the link

I bought the genuine Nikon one after reading bad reviews on the generic where the plug separates in the camera. Didn't want to risk in on my D600.

If you can afford it, the CamRanger is excellent, but expensive. Take a look at:

APP's for smartphones are toys, not for pro cameras!

instead of this you have;

the dslrdashboard has good features, and there is an android version of helicon remote that works on my phone. the wireless wu1a on my d7100 seems a little short ranged. my best macro setup seems to be the helicon remote tethered to phone or tablet and mounted on the tripod with the camera. Electronic control of focus stacks with out moving camera or lense. I just started exploring macro and by no means an experienced user.

Those things are great. They're cheap, they fit most cameras, and they can do all sorts of remote shooting - time lapse, etc.

I'm using qDslrDashboard with my D810 and also used it with my D800 until I sold it. The software is free. I use it with a TP-Link wireless router that cost about $30. This is basically the same as the Camranger setup but at 1/10 of the cost.

I use TriggerTrap and love it. Gives you lots of possibilities to experiment with. I use in with my iPhone and iPad, though there is an Android version. One benefit is that I keep an old iPhone in my camera bag to connect when I want to use it as a wireless remote between the two iPhones. Would highly recommend it.
