No one writes, wrights, rights, rites a letter anymore. Can you remember when the last time you got a hand written letter from someone? I have been born with bad penmanship and rather type my letters. They used to teach us penmanship in a class. (but that might be dating my age here) LOL

My mother was a proof reader at a local printing company....I, on the other hand, have a poor grasp of spelling. As a young police officer I received many reports of assaults and had to write reports. I had been on the St Louis Police Department for 3 years when I caught my own errors. Supervisors had, for three years, not caught the wrong spelling of Assault. Later in my career, after becoming a supervisor and having to approve reports, I noticed that many of the worst report writers, when it came to grammar and spelling, were the college grads from some of the better schools. The Chief of Police in St Louis, read a report an officer had submitted which reflected that an accident victim had his "Foot Decapitated." The Chief went ballistic and ordered that every recruit in the police academy be issued a dictionary.

My issue is with misspelled words in newspapers, magazines, online articles, etc. These are professional writers. Were are the spell checkers and editors?

Did you really mean, WHERE are the spell checkers and editors?
I often see on UHH where the word were is used instead of the correct word, where.

Many high school English teachers mangle the language, but not too many professors do.

A lot of the words in the English language are spelt different in America than how we spell them.

I wonder if you really meant to say, spelled different rather than spelt different. I wonder if there is even a word, spelt.

Very often on the UHH I see the words advise and advice misused. It seems most people know only the word advise as they write, I need some advise on a new camera OR they want someone to give them advise on a different filter for a lens. Advise is used when I advise you to buy a Sony over a Panasonic camera. Someone could advise another person on a proper lens for macro photography.

Advice is used when I am asking for advice on what camera to buy. I can advise you on what camera to buy or I can give you advice. There really is a difference.

Many posters above have said, as long as you can understand what I am trying to get across then my point is made and all is acceptable. In reality some of the posters on UHH and many other forums write so bad that while I can usually understand what they are trying to say it is very hard at times. If I have to sit and dwell on a paragraph to understand what you are trying to tell me then most of the time I have no time to look at your paragraph any longer. If you can't take the time to write legibly how do you expect me to want to take more time trying to understand you?

I am not talking about a simple typo here but just plain old fashioned illiteracy.

Sorry but, No, I really did not. There is an H in the word Where. Is it that hard to insert that letter where it belongs. Were the letter not needed it could be left out. But it is needed to complete the proper word, where...

We (that would be you and I) probably have no idea of what they teach, or don't teach in schools these days regarding the English language, grammar, spelling, etc. This generation is learning how to "text" and not taught cursive writing. Perhaps these are the necessary survival skill of this time. Call us senior citizens, fossils or old farts but I still believe kids in schools in the USA should learn to read, write and speak standard English. A couple of books that are still useful in this regard are: The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. & E. B. White and the Harbrace College Handbook by John C. Hodges and Mary E. Whitten. QED

That's all well and true BUT, there are quite a few HS graduates that can't compose or even read a cohesive sentence. Lat night on Fox news, The Kelly Report. Megyn Kelly had a great show on Who is teaching our children what?

One statement that really caught my ear was a college professor telling his students that his job is to undo everything their parents told and taught them. Had my daughter told me that was what any of her college professors had told her, I would have gone up to the college and reminded that so called professor that since I am paying for her education I would have a major say so in what kind of BS was taught.

I had some similar experiences when I returned to college after the Marine Corps. I had some very heated discussions with several professors about the drivel they were trying to profess as the truth. Since I had lived through a majority of the history and knew the truth First Person, I did some serious correcting. I graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a 3.95 GPA. Now, since I am a supporting Alumni, I have a lot more say in what is taught or NOT taught. At the Faculty and Alumni get together s, quite a few of the professors avoid me like I had Ebola or some major social disease. GOD, I love it.
