I want to find some records of my grandfathers birth in Latvia.
The town he was born is no longer called that. His year was about 1880. I say about because there are conflicting entries on various papers since he came to Australia in 1911.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how/ where I can best find info on him.
It seems the geography has changed from the old Russian days in the late 1800s. Town & county names.
The info I have is: Town, Griwaishen-Lettonia, Courland. Latvia.
Any hints as to where in Latvia, would be a good starting point.
Thanks in anticipation.
When my dad wanted this same info for his ancestors in what was East Germany, he found much info in the town church (Methodist I think). Every thing (birth,Marriage, and Death records) was all in High German, and he could find no translator. Luckily I was working for a MSU Prof at the time who was born and raised there and the issue was resolved. Some records dated back to the1500's!
Good Luck!
Edit: Try this link, maybe of some help.

I ran a simple Google search and got this.
http://www.google.com/search?q=Griwaishen-Lettonia%2C+Courland.+Latvia.&oq=Griwaishen-Lettonia%2C+Courland.+Latvia.&aqs=chrome..69i57.3344j0j7&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8Not a lot but it does have info on its history which could lead to more search areas. Genealogy is a fascinating and frustrating hobby. Your information will come a little at a time and then wham, sometimes a lot at once.
Good luck!
