The Amish are noted for their perfectionism and attention to detail in the things they make. I find it interesting, and totally in character, that they appear to be studying the safety border next to the tracks. Something most people pay no attention to. BTW, just caught an episode of the new (I think) show "Amish Reno-gades". Pretty good. The two Amish fellows are a hoot.

Well said, LFingar! I just bought a bedroom set made by the Amish. Absolutely top-notch quality!

I seem to remember that the Amish do not want their pictures taken. Is my memory correct? If so, good thing the picture was taken from behind.

Note: I'm not posting this to generate a controversy, only a curiosity question.

wow Erv, didn't realize they did that. I went to Arthur, Illinois about 8 years ago, very interesting to see. I read a book about the amish one time.

Most of them are ok with you taking their picture, if you ask first. We go down and wonder around Amish country all the time. I love to watch them plant and then harvest is really fun. Last year one of them making hay let me drive the team for a few laps.:) He told me to come back any time.:) And even asked if we wanted to stay for dinner.:)

I don't live in "The States" but have visited many times. Personally I love the Amish ( and the Pennsylvania Dutch) I also like the shot.

thanks so much for looking. I just saw this couple and thought how interested they looked at everything, especially the things we don't see.

Three years ago my daughter took AMTRAK from Southern California to Cleveland, Ohio. She always wanted to experience a train ride. She absolutely loved it. Nice accommodations, good meals, fun sights, and interesting co-passengers. She made friends with an Amish family who traveled to Southern California and then on to Mexico. Amish in Mexico? The Amish man was the local Amish community's homeopathic version of a druggist to purchase his stock an bring it back into the United States. No narcotics or controlled drugs, just homeopathic medicines at really inexpensive prices. Living very close to a few Amish communities, I can attest to to fact that they are not only a tight-knit group, but tight with their purses, too. The trip to Mexico was a cost-saving venture.

I have a few English (non-Amish) friends who drive the Amish to their work outside of their own community. Most Amish still shun modern ways, but are not critical of it. They are for the most part a very thrifty, hard working, honest people who prefer to keep to themselves. You would be hard pressed to find a better neighbor.

With all the shootings in the news as of late, we could all use their a dose of their attitude. When a tragic mass murder occurred at an Amish schoolhouse, they immediately razed the building and built a new schoolhouse at different location. There were no comments from the Amish about the crazy English guy who murdered their children - the just moved on. Kind of humbling.

I grew up in Amish country and you are correct. It is because of the bible quotation about 'make no other images before me" That is why the well no fabric Amish dolls never have faces.
