Thanks for the links, but, jeez, too many words. Perhaps that reaction explains why I like photography: The photograph, wordless, expresses itself strictly in visual terms. I feel at home with this activity.

The basic primitive brain of mammals was tuned to shades of gray night vision. Perhaps because of this primitive beginnings we react more to those shades of gray rather than the distracting confusion of color. The 1930's Frankenstein was terrifying because we had to focus on shades of gray to pick out dangerous images... the snake, tiger etc... in this case a patched together monster like a Canon with Nikon lenses!! (No, he was the monster, Dr. Frankenstein was the creator.)

Color vision was only needed and evolved to allow use to see ripe fruit. Later females utilized it to advertise, much as they do today, that they are ripe for mating. (how dull we men are, dressing in "gray flannel suites" indicating success in business, thus attracting mates!)

When B&W was common, there was no Photoshop. One of the few ways we had to control an image was with R,G, B filters and hope for the best. Now we can take a color image, adjust the color balance for the same effects.

There are two sides of this coin, as usual.

B&W can be an art form, there is no question.

B&W is also used by incompetents who think they can hide their lack of skills using what is for them a 'gimmick'. They are fooling themselves if they believe the difference cannot be made between a B&W created with care and the garbage they want to display/promote as 'art'.

What a misguided soul you are. You call yourself a photographer/artist????? You live in your own little ( I repeat LITTLE world ) stay there and leave us alone.

We used to have a couple of others who acted the same way. One is banned and the other suspended (although I don't know the difference). Admin may take some time to get around to it, but, as I've often said, "Time wounds all heels!"

Not a problem, I was somewhat amused by his childish effort.
BTW, I do not consider that picture a work of "art." It was only chosen because it has R,G,B to show the effects of color balance.
If a photographer used color film in the '60's and '70's you were dependent on the processor. With B&W the photographer had more control especially if he had a darkroom.

I believe it was John Lennon who first said "Time wounds all heels".

Jerk, I can understand why you think along those lines!

A quick story. I knew a girl that worked on fishing boats in Alaska. She started with about the only job they would let girls do then, that of a baiter.
She started as an apprentice, but in two short seasons, was promoted to the level of Master!

A quick side note, her son is now one of the captains on, " The Worlds Deadliest Catch"!

True story.

Jerk, DO behave yourself here, or you will just be one more Jerk, off the Hog!
By the way Jerk, a warm and hearty welcome to the Hog!!!

Look at the stunning work of Graham Smith, one of our Hogs, and you'll see art and beauty in B&W. To say because it's B&W he's just self-indulgent would be a true disservice to him and an injustice to his work.

I absolutely agree. Graham's work is stunning.

In an age where digital photography is ubiquitous, and post processing allows everyman to bump saturation levels and create hyper-real images, black and white photography seems like a curious anachronism. What do you Hogs think

Leonardo and Rembrant pruduced images in color -- fresco or oil or what ever. They also produced images in B&W -- pen & ink , etchings etc. we're these later images a gimmick??
