The heck they don't! They generously give away the Adobe DNG Converter and keep it as current as anything else in their raw processing kits.

You have to use something to move files from you camera memory to your computer, even if it is Windows or the Apple version. If you use the FREE DNG Converter for that step, all your raws will open in about anything Adobe has delivered for years.

I tried DNG Converter to put some raw files in a 4 year old version of Premier Elements from a 1 year old camera. It worked perfect, even for that!

Bill, Thanks for all your help from yesterday!!! I took a memory card to my local camera store and loaded it into a Canon 7D MKII and did some shooting and they even let me go outside to try it out. Shot in JPEG and Raw too. Brought the memory card home and with CS5 was able to download everything and transfer to PS and open in ACR and all is fine! I did load the DNG converter 8.7 and the latest version of DPP that included the 7D MKII. It may be an extra step but it does work. Thanks again...Ron

The only downside I can find to using the DNG converter is that then you get another set of matching large files. If you're space constrained on your HD and want to retain the NEF's (which I am right now) then it could be a problem.

I just haven't wrapped my head around dumping the "originals". Solution: I have a large package (Costco) of DVD's tx'd them out there.

For those complaining about the lack of upgrade (which I did at first) remember that CS5 is 8 generations ago. Not much gets supported anywhere for that long.

I recently purchased a Nikon D7100 and of course tried it out by taking some photos. Well lo and behold my CS5 version of photoshop will not read the raw files and tells me that the camera is too new for my version.

So now I have two questions. Is there an update for CS5 that will read the D7100 NEF (raw) files, or 2) would I be better off getting something like Photoshop Elements 13 and will the new elements 13 read the Raw files taken with the D7100?

I have CS 5 and the Nikon 7100 and they work fine Adobe has a free downlaod that will allow you to convert the images for CS5 to open

What is the free download? Is it the DNG convertor? Wh not use Nikons own software to convert to TIFF or JPG and then process in CS5?

Yes, it is the DNG converter. I have never used Nikon software.

2 reasons.

1 Tiff doesn't carry the exif data so you can't apply the camera and lens corrections.
2 Converting to Jpeg from raw then P-Ping defeats the purpose of shooting in raw. Might as well shoot in jpeg and be done with it.
3. (One more) You can't convert in bulk. DNG is essentially the same file as the raw. Uncompressed and with all data attached.

My Bridge software shows the EXIF data after conversion to TIFF by View NX, also View NX converts images in bulk to TIFF and Photoshop processes TIFF images in bulk.

You are quite right, the Exif data is all there, my bad.
I should have been more clear. What you lose in a Tiff conversion is the ability to use the lens and camera profiles in bridge (at least in CS5) which is what I do first.

I took one of the NEF's from my 610 and did a side by side conversion in NX2 and the DNG converter.

What I got that was a surprise is file size.
Original 610 NEF 27.14 MB
DNG Conversion 22.13 MB No surprise
NX2 Conversion 54.73 MB Big surprise that I can't explain.

All that said it is quite possible (I haven't looked) that the latest iteration of updates for CS5 will allow you to work 7100 NEF's as a previous poster (livto paddle) suggested. I know I had to update my CS5 when I moved from my D80 to the 7000. There is none for the 610 so I have researched this topic extensively.

At the end of the day I most likely will "upgrade". The whole cloud thing is not overly comfortable for me for some reason. Probably because I'm not an early adopter. As my sainted IT father used to say, "It's the early Christian that gets the hungry lion."
