Here are a few links to safe FREE sites--most I have used and been happy with.

============================

STAY AWAY FROM THIS SITE

http://download.cnet.com/windows/

people I know have downloaded from there and got a lot of crap on their computers.

I also used Element 10 and CS6--prefer Elements software. I had Corel but uninstalled it-not happy with the software. Not every software program will be the answer to an editing situation [some may not agree] so having at less a few other programs has been the answer for me hope this helps.

Main editors I use are the paint.net.amihotornot.com.au/ and elements 10 and sometimes the free program will out do even the 2 Adobe programs

I hope this helps
take care
Ellen

This one is really good for viewing images http://www.irfanview.com/
I have found it better than the windows 7 viewer
and it has a very simple editing option in the software package. If anyone has any questions--please send me a PM and I will send back an answer on the programs.

Elements on sale...
But Lightroom it still the most valuable tool for RAW.

Does this mean that PS & Elements are not so good at doing the RAW bit as LR? Is this why so many photogs end up buying both?
I have read that LR has a good file (pic) management system (as does my PhotoPlus) but what about PS?
One thing that has put me off considering Adobe (apart from price) is that they not only have a full and a lite prog for sale, but that they also have LR for sale. Most of the other editors have a full prog for sale and a lite or older version which is free. (they obviously have confidence that people will be impressed with their lite version and buy the full one). I am in no way putting PS or LR down - I haven't used them - but I am not into making rich and greedy corporations richer. :)

Thanks to all who commented! I downloaded GIMP and will give that a try. I also gave the Mrs. the wink-wink, nod-nod for either Paintshop or Photoshop for the holidays.

There are quite a few clever editing progs out there. I guess we try and then buy what we feel comfortable with. For me that means the most intuitive and the shortest learning curve. But it's still got to do the business!
