Thanks Mountain Man, Thought that was the case but wanted to be sure. Good thing to be very aware of in the beginning!

As I noted, for LIGHTROOM, if you EXPORT, which is the same as making another copy with "Save As" in other programs, then you can look at it with anything and see the changes.

But that does not happen automatically and a lot of people miss the point.

There is also a preference you need to check so even other Adobe programs can read the changes. For some reason it isn't the default to save the change data with the image file. But you can tell it to do so. Sometimes it will take a little time for it do that but it is OK to shut down if you tells you it isn't finished: it will finish the job next time you run it. But even though those changes are saved with the image data other programs can't read and make the changes.

I doubt you will find one app for both your IOS appliance AND PC. That said, just make sure to SAVE your photos in a format that is compatible to both, such as (possibly) TIFF or BMP. I've used Adobe Elements for years, ever since I got off the yearly $200 upgrade price for Photoshop merrygoround! I'm a 'simple' user, and Elements does everything I need! Plus it is available for about $80 or so! But it can't hurt to try the freebies first, as long as they can use a compatible format. It is just amazing what tweaking the levels can do for a photo!

If you want to stay with Nikon they haveCapture NX2, has a free 60 day trial ( http://www.capturenx.com/en/index.html) There are some really neat things you can do do to an image and correct mistakes. You can get it cheaper than Nikon's price if you shop around. If you go with Nikon Nx2 I would highly recommend Scott Diussa's 23 lesson tutorial on how to use it. It costs about $20 and you can download it here:
http://nikon.trainibles.com/course/nikon-capture-nx/.
Also Nikon has View Nx2, which is a free down load and it is packed with lots of helpful steps in editing, sorting and cataloging your images, http://www.nikon.com/news/2010/0817_viewnx2_03.htm
This is the only one I have used so i can't compare it to anything else, and am still leaning more almost every time I use it.
I'd be interested in what other Hoggers have to say about it.

Most of my compositions have gone unedited/unenhanced. I recently used an iPad version of Photoshop to enhance a photo and was pleasantly surprised. I have the resources to invest in software to use, but would welcome comments and suggestions as I focus my search.

I use a Nikon D90 and shoot mostly sports and landscape. The one necessity is that my sensor has developed a hot pixel in the upper right quadrant that I need to edit for larger prints. I'm not ready to upgrade the body and the problem isn't severe enough to send for repair (yet...).

Didn't Nikon just release Capture NX-D as a free replacement for both View NX-2 and Capture NX?

It is still at version 1.0 and seemed a tad slow/flaky when I looked at it.

It has been suggested to me ( another beginner) to subscribe to Adobe Phototshop/ Lighroom for 9.99/ month to get a good taste and feel of it without investing big bucks.
Thoughts on that?
Thx!

If you haven't seen or tried it, you might like to take a look at "onOne Perfect Photo Suite 9". You can download a free trial to check it out for yourself before deciding to buy or not. It is available at"http://www.ononesoftware.com". You can also see loads of videos on YouTube.

Its all relative. If you have two or three thousand or more wrapped up in camera gear and do a lot pf PP, $10 a month may seem like a bargain. If you're on a fixed income and have an old lower end camera body and kit lenses, than $10 may seen like like an extravagant expense.

I've always used Corel Paintshop Pro. It's reasonably priced and works as well as Photoshop at a fraction of the price. Plus it is user-friendly. You can download a free 30 day trial on their site.

For a beginner who hasn't worked with processing software I would recommend Picasa. Free. When he or she feels the need for more advanced results I would get Elements 12 or 13. It's easy to learn the basics so you can get off to a fast start. It can do about 93% of what Photoshop does. Then if you like buy Lightroom which is an industry standard. Used with Elements there won't be much you can't do. In the mean time learn your camera inside and out. And learn the basics of photography like the rule of thirds, composition, lighting, etc. Software often won't compensate for poor photography techniques.

I totally agree. And it is my favorite price: FREE. Go to Google.com and download Picassa.

Adobe Elements from about 9 and up . Adobe is considered the defacto "standard" for all postprocessing and most all tutorials that you see will be for Elements, Lightroom, or Photoshop .......

I am just getting started into digital SLR as of a few days ago after finally moving from slide film and have been wondering the same thing. I do have iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and have used it with my pocket digital and I will probably be looking in the near future to something else.
For the time being iPhoto seems to be ok.

All very helpful. But please, the difference between PSE and LR? I thought they worked together?
Thx. Maureen

They do... PSE is Photoshop elements - a scaled down version of Photoshop - it does layering, blending & pixel editing (and much more), Lightroom is management of all your photos and basic editing/tweaking.

Lightroom also adds keywording and cataloging for your images - when you get thousands of images properly keyworded LR makes searching and finding 1 out of 10,000 images a snap.

What you can't edit in Lightroom you edit by calling PSE as your external editor.

I honestly can do 90-95% of my editing in Lightroom, only going to Photoshop or PSE for the other 5-10% of the time.
