It's not a Cotton Mouth. They have no distinguishable neck and they are also a lot more stocky.

Try young gopher snake, Pituophis catenifer Blainville I believe. Harmless, but will sometimes bite if you reach directly at it, but usually handle nicely when carefully approached and picked up (NOT by squeezing the neck!!).

I doubt that I could be convinced to pick up and handle a snake that I wuzzn't shure what it wuz. Photos of it suit me just fine.

Looks like California has a lotta snakes. No wonder them folks is on weed and drugs. They taken the pain medicine just in case they get bit cause their chances are so high with all them snakes.

Actually I lived south of Coronado and we had rattlers in our back yard all the time. Yep I remember rattlers, horny toads and scorpians. Yep and I remember my mom, bless her heart, just beating those critters with her broom. She would wear out a broom in no time. Screaming and swattin, screaming and swattin. Then she'd go buy another broom cause there was so many critters.

If that snake wasn't a cotton mouth to start with it would've been by the time my mom got done with it.
