Don't give up on the Mac just because the support for Aperture is going away. We haven't seen what Photos, the replacement for iPhoto and Aperture will do. If you look at the information from Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (I think it was in June) you will see that the are still doing a lot to support photo editing. Photos my be a step up from Aperture.

It all comes down to your budget. PC will be just as functional (I've used both, been in IT since 1983 - supported many clients with either one, the other or both). The myths about stability and problems, and virus attacks is just that - myths. Macs have been attacked in recent months with Mac-specific viruses.

Performance for similarly configured systems will be similar. No magic here.

You can get 4K and 5K displays for PC/PC Laptop, if that is what you need. Or you can save that $$ and just get a pair of smaller 24" displays which might be more functional. Also, a laptop with 32 gb ram, .5T SSD boot drive AND a 1 TB system drive, and an NVida Quadro display card will cost less than $2000, and it can display up to 10 bit color on the appropriate monitor. You cannot do that on any Mac, since the Mac OS is limited to just 8 bit or sRGB color depth and space.

A Macbook Pro with comparable specs (sorta, since the MBP cannot accommodate more than one internal drive, and it doesn't support wide gamut display), will cost north of $3200. Comparing the two, you can get visibily superior image quality with a properly configured PC. With Mac, you really only have one choice - and that choice needs to work for video, gaming (which it really doesn't - gamers don't like Macs for a reason), photo editing, general automation etc etc. You can customize the PC for specific intent - with storage, display and ram with more options for a better result.

For me, those are the deal breakers for Mac.

There is zero that you can do on a Mac that you can't do just as well on a PC. Once you are in your application, its all the same. In the meantime you can use the $1200 savings to buy a new camera, lens, a weekend vacation, or whatever.
It all comes down to your budget. PC will be just ... (show quote)

Well, I'd tend to agree with you, except that the latest update to the MacOS, Yosemite, seems to be causing difficulties for Lightroom and Photoshop users, on Macbook Pros, iMacs etc.

Specifically, PS won't launch, and LR shuts down after a while, sometimes during metadata updating. Hmm . . .

Perfect systems like the Mac OS, should not be having problems like this.

Something I was taught when studying Operations Research and economics.

Every model we develop to explain how things work will eventually be proven wrong in some important and fundamental way, but, until it is and as long as it working for what we need right now, keep using it.

When it is finally proven wrong, move on.

The same is true for OS’s and cameras.

I will never understand the blind loyalty of Mac users to their brand, in spite of being shown over and over again where it falls short compared to the alternatives - yet they insist on buying an outstandingly mediocre product and paying a premium price for it, with no discernible difference other than the coolness factor (status symbol) and it's visual appeal. I don't buy computers on visual appeal - they have to do what I need them to do, reliably and as cheaply as possible.

But that is the appeal. It is not just mediocre, it is outstandingly mediocre!

I have had PC's since the early 80's. They were a necessary part of my job to do administrative tasks. Since I was a Unix System engineer for 25+ years, I'm much more comfortable under the hood on the Mac. . Why do you think it is a mediocre product? How does it fall short compared to alternatives?

I just bought a Hewlett-Packard 17" screen laptop, with Win 8.1 on it. Love the computer, but Win 8.1 is frustrating. Touch the synaptic pad a little heavy and the screen resizes. It's sometimes a pain. Win 7 was much better, though Win 8.1 is stable and has some good features.

I've repaired them and they are no different than a budget priced HP, Dell or similar product. Earlier versions had 6 bit displays which they called millions of colors and were sued for not being specific enough. Then they came out with retina displays, which are just a fancy way of saying they had 2560x1600 resolution, again, Dell, Samsung and others had the same LG screen used in the Mac, and you had the option, if you were doing photo editing, of getting a matte finish on it which is preferable to the high gloss versions. Also, hard drives were low cost versions. Many were 5400 rpm, then later 7200 rpm drives, but not Seagate's better drives. They even had a recall in 2011 for the 1 TB drives installed in iMacs. Not horrible, but hardly worth the premium price they ask.

The difference is you can get the same quality for a lot less with a Windows machine - or you can spend the same as you would for a Mac and get premium components. What you can't get, and I really wonder if f it is that much different from just taking a machine in to the local repair shop - is Apple Care at $100/year or more. I know of at least a dozen people who have purchased iMacs in the last 2 years and have had to use their service to fix or replace components, and in some cases lost all the files on the hard drive. This stuff happens with PCs too, but 95% of the time I can recover a hard drive to at least get the files off.

I have not had a situation where a mainstream application did not load or run on a computer when the OS was patched or version-upgraded.

All computers can have issues from time to time. But the mystique of the Mac just doesn't prove true in practice. There is no magic - under the hood it's just another average computer running a closed operating system with a limited set of options - nothing more, nothing less.

Under the hood I was referring to the OS. Should have been more clear :)
