If your idea is that you want more reach, get a 1.4X, and keep what you have and your problem is solved. Look at Swamp Gator's posts, he get fantastic results from that set up. If you just want something new flip a coin. You can't go wrong with either

You have 2 great bodies. I would go with the lens.

Background: I currently own a Canon 7D and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens (and just incidentally, a Canon SX60 HS thrown into the mix as well as a Canon 5D MK III).

I can justify upgrading one or the other, but not both. The upgrade will probably happen in mid-2015.

So...... should I get the Canon 7D MK II or the new Canon 100-400mm L series lens?

I see more potential useable gains for your imagery from a 7D II than the II 100-400lens .......

Greg, I think Swamp Gator uses a 300mm prime f4 L IS along with a 1.4 tele converter. I am using the same with and without 1.4x. Also have used 2x and when focused is great. I did get spotty focus with my 5D III and 2x.
Bob, I would wait for results on new 100-400mm. New IS will be an upgrade. I bought the current 100-400 and returned it as my Sigma 150-500 was sharper at 400mm. I got a used 300mm f4 L for $945.00 at Adorama and that is my "go to lens" for birds in flight and static. Sometime I put the 1.4 II on and am happy.

I heard that the new 7Dii needs a new update as it won't download off of the card? Did I understand this correctly. ???

If it were me, I would opt for the lens and then save my money for the 5D Mark IV. There may be some delay in obtaining the new 5D and that will give you time to save for it. I'm new enough to the group so that I don't know what kind of photography you do. I loved my older 100 to 400 push/pull lens but really disliked the amount of dust I would pull inside when used in the field. I will be buying the new lens and have already sold my older one. I will also be upgrading to the 5D Mark IV sometime next year. The way I view it, is that you can get a top-quality lens upgrade now and then the body upgrade next year. Of course it depends on your desire for the 5D Mark IV. What I would worry about is having the new 5D come out and regretting my decision to get a new body now. Better yet, why not wait until the 5D Mark IV comes out so that you can assess your desire for that body?

Keep the 70 - 300 and get a 400 prime.

THIS, and if you don't want to switch lenses consider getting a used 1DMK2 or such and have a 1.4 extender in your pocket too (even if only good for manual focus).

edit -- never mind about the 1DMK2 (since you have that wonderful 5DMK3). For the re-enactments, have two camera's one set for longest range and other with 70-300 on it. And have long range on good tripod and gimbal.

Why, because Canon's sensors are lagging behind - their lenses are and always have been cutting edge great.

But their cameras maximize the sensor in the body. It is about a camera not about a sensor. The sensor is just one part and not the most important part of a camera.

Bob, your work is wonderful with the equipment you have now. I always enjoy it. I would go with the lens now. Then buy the 7D in the future. By then it will have come down in price some and that's always a good thing.

I shoot stock and my eyesight is slowly going south so I bought the Canon 7D II for it's reputed AF. I have never been happier with any camera ... or lens.. as I am with this one. Add the extender and buy the 7. I think you'll love it.

I'm not having any problems downloading from either card directly from the camera. If this problem really did exist it would have been all over this forum, and several others.

There is a special offering at Adorama, that is a phone order special that you have to ask for.

Well, what is the offer other than "special"? Is it for the camera or lens?

Adorama and they have a unadvertised special for $1599 for the body only. Only available through phone orders not online. Not sure how long it will last but as of 1:30 pm EST it was still on. free overnight shipping, and extended 2 year warrantee with drops and spills coverage, but only if you ask.

I believe that there will also be promotions on the Mark 2 m lens.
