If you truly want to focus on Macro, the Canon MPE 65 is the best way to go. One to One & Five to One magnification. Manual focus only disadvantage. A truly dedicated lens.

DUH !! how will a canon lens fit a NIKON!!!

You should go on-line to JR Electronics. Open the drop down for lenses and adapters, they have the best prices I have found. They have a Tamaron lens I have been looking at for macro 449 I believe and they have a 100 mm cannon 1:1 for 599. I will bite the bullet and get the cannon for my eos T3. I have read this is a good lens for macro. You can trust this company, I have bought 2 tamaron lenses allready from them, one wide angle and a fish eye. Both work great and no problem shipping. Also bought 2 tripods, ( one for each car)
Give them a look. Bobbyg

You must have missed the word"TRULY". If you want the best Macro lens, and the most amazing Macro shots. You would "Obviously" have to switch to Canon!! Otherwise "Google" best Nikon Macro Lenses.

OK here's my 2 cents. I have the macro lenses and they work, but I only use them for close up pictures of stuff I sell on eBay. Never tried them for anything else.
As pointed out, they are extra glass in front of your lense and by that I mean a LOT glass. The +10 is very thick.

I just won a Kenko set of Macro Tubes on eBay for $125. There's no glass and this set will allow all the auto functions of your camera and lens. Of course I haven't received the set yet so I don't know how they'll work, but I'm expecting they'll be pretty good until I can afford a macro lens.

Also, I'm pretty sure my 55-300 mm Nikkor kit lens has a macro function, but that may be a function of the camera.

So, there's some more options to mull until you get that macro lens.

I have the Macro Tubes and the 55-300 mm Nikkor kit lens. I have Nikon d90, they work very well!

Well, if you are not tired of reading yet, Here is what I will say - The simplist and cheapest macro is a 50mm F1.8 standard lens with a special 2-element close-up filter - Nikon made them in 52mm screw in size and Canon still does make them - the 250D - $75. The 50mm f1.8 will cost about $120 - AND the quality is is very good - you will be astonished how good !
