Ellie, this may sound far fetched but it's not.
Especially if you can leave the eve before. Why don't you go to Paris!! Doesn't get more romantic than that. I'm serious, it's quite fast on the train.
Otherwise go to Brighten or Windsor castle. Have fun. ;-)

:). Thanks, but... Been to Paris.

Years ago we hoped to take a golfing vacation through Scotland/Ireland for our 50th. Things have changed and that is no longer an option. We both think London for a week is a good option. Already paid for airline. We chose the month because travel agent, tour books and friends who have been all said May was 'best' month. Now what I am hearing here is that is not the case. So our only option is to be prepared. Still don't know what temperatures to expect, though. And still hope for good photo ops.

I found these figures which show the averages in London over the past few years:

How about a visit to Cambridge? It has many historic buildings and fascinating museums, it's also very compact and easily reached by train from London. Just a few miles from Cambridge is the tiny city of Ely with it's truly magnificent cathedral, easily reached, again by train, from Cambridge.

All true but watch out for crazy students on bicycles in Cambridge. They are everywhere and traffic signals mean nothing to many of them. Driving on the left is weird enough without bicycles whizzing every which-way. They don't ride on the side walk (pavement in England) so walking is relatively safe. Lots of places to stop and get coffee or just stand and stare - magnificent buildings everywhere. Also take a punt ride on the river for more shots of wonderful scenery.
Ely is just as Graham says, really quaint. Found a café there where the staff ignored us. We departed from that one without being served. No it wasn't because of our accent they ignored everybody. Found a spotlessly clean café staffed by pretty polish girls who were a delight to talk with. (Red painted place on main street, usually busy, not far from cathedral.) Walk around the outside of the cathedral and you'll find a side entrance. This avoids the main entrance where they charge a fee to enter a place of worship. (I hate that but I was happy to leave a donation for the upkeep of the place.) Nice little souvenir shop in the cathedral if you collect stuff for gifts. Cambridge and Ely are beautiful and highly recommended.

We went in July and had a wonderful time. One of the nice things is that you can use the "Tubes" to go anywhere very easily. The Victoria and Ablert Museum is special and whatever you do don't miss Harrods. I think we are going back next July. You will have a great time.

My husband and I are going to London for a week in mid May. I am wanting to plan one day trip from London that would provide good photo ops as well as be an enjoyable day spent with my husband. (Our 50th anniversary)

Unfortunately, I am unable to do much walking. So no long hikes or walks could be done. I enjoy more wildlife and nature photography, but also unique buildings such as castles, bridges, cathedrals, etc.

I am hoping to get some suggestions from those who have done this or live in the area. I have considered Stonehenge, but a couple who have been recently were disappointed. Plus thought it might involve a lot of walking.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/ suggestions.

Searcher is the most accurate relative to London. Be Prepared. The weather there is extremely unpredictable. I've been there in June and encountered very cold wet weather.

Otherwise there is a tremendous amount to see. Consider Westminster Abby(they used to allow visitors to take pictures in the evening one or more nights a month you need to check), Buckingham Palace w/the changing of the guard and The Tower of London. The theater district can give you more high quality shows than you can handle some playing in the same theater for over 20 years.

The tour/cruise from London to Greenwich is nice also. The parks are beautiful and you can limit your walking to preference.

Don't miss the hop on hop off buses they are worth every penny.

There are many, many more places that are too many to list. Look at Trip Adviser they normally have pictures and reviews.

For outside London many of the other posts are good ones. Stonehenge is worthless to go so far for so little.

So many good photo ops take extra cards.

Thanks, Chuck. Plan to use the Ho Ho buses for sure. Hope to do all you suggested. That is also what I heard about Stonehenge.

So I should expect to be cold in May? I was hoping to be in 60's at least during the daytime. How much warm clothing? Had not considered bringing a heavy jacket.

Thought I might be using the ho ho buses to get from one place to the other, even those that are nearby.

You should get some nice days but take a wooly jumper and a brolly. Enjoy. Chests

Thanks, Searcher. Temps were what I was expecting. 60's during the day and 50's in evening. Rain average was more than info I have. But will have umbrella

I wanted to see a castle. From a book, I selected Conway at Coldwyn Bay, North Wales. The entire town is encircled by a high wall, thanks to Edward I (Longshanks). The castle overlooks the bay and is amazing. The wood planks of its floors are long gone, leaving the circular towers of stone. I doubt that you would want to ascend them since the steps are stones jutting inward from the walls and there are no safety railings. My dad and I stayed at a B&B above the Mariner pub. While he took a nap, I visited the pub. The local men's choir showed up and began singing (of course). It is said that Welsh newborns cry in harmony. All were quite friendly. I heard the usual complaint about Americans during the war: "over-sexed, over-paid, and over here." Then they sang the Welsh version of Aura Lee and Love Me Tender. They bought me a pint and we parted.

[quote=Searcher]The trouble with English weather is that it is so variable, which is why conversations in UK between strangers usually start with a discourse on prevailing conditions.

There is a rhyme "April SHOWERS, bring May FLOWERS, June SUN, brings SUMMERTIME FUN !!!" Unfortunately, the climate does not always follow the rhyme.

Or "Ne'r cast a clout til May is out." I'm not sure whether this refers to May the Month or the flowers of the May Tree.

May I ask Searcher whereabouts in Kent you live? We used to live in Thanet, mostly Margate and the surrounding towns.
