So many factors go into choices, personal as well as technical. For example, I started over 30 years ago with a Kaypro CPM OS computer (anybody remember them?). Perfect Writer was bundled with it. I became very facile with it. Then I upgraded to a PC. Our workplace was a WordPerfect shop. I became very facile with that. When MS Word conquered the world I still use WP because it it a most flexible instrument in contrast to Word's clunky restrictions. I'm used to it.

Camera choices are much the same. I started out with a pocket Olympus 390 as my first digital then upgraded to an Olympus 765. Lost that in a canoeing accident. Decided to check into more sophisticated cameras. I chose Canon over Nikon because the prices for what seemed to similar cameras. The first was an EOS Rebel T1i. Gave that to my granddaughter and got a T2i. Assembled quite a selection of lenses and other accessories. Liked the camera very much. Recently upgraded to a Canon 70D which I feel is terrific. I suspect others can share similar experiences with Nikon and many other brands. The absolute bottom line is very personal experience. One can find out only by going over horns and trying out.

Yes, questions asked about which is best between Canon and Nikon have been asked way, way too often and way, way too many times, yet has anyone ever torn apart a Canon or a Nikon of equal value and really looked over the guts inside both camera bodies ?

As for Canon, you might want to start with a typical EOS body often sold in Mom & Pop discount stores such as Walmart or Best Buy. Then, pick out a Nikon body of equal quality and equal value..

You may be surprised as to which one has the sturdiest parts within and which one has proved to have the longest lasting shutter mechanisms over the years.

If you have never ventured inside either, plan to do so sometime ! You may be very surprised when you see which brand has a more solid construction !!!

I will not reveal my findings nor findings from repair shop techs I know, but if you check them out for yourself, you will, then, become a believer as to which brand puts their money in engineering as they have put their money from their advertising mouths :)

Oh, before the bashing upon this writer begins, why not check out two equal value cameras from both companies for yourself ! Yes, you will be surprised and don't forget to check out the wiring and the motherboards too and see if you can determine which brand has higher quality, heavier duty integral routings. AND, for what it is worth, I own both brands of cameras ~ those of the past and those made today.. Hint: You may even dive into a couple of film cameras so as to get a head start with the process because not much has changed in their individual qualities provided even today. IMHO, both are well made cameras, but can you find which one may be better ?

This guy will sign off for now because it's way too early in the day for him to begin taking the heat, although, you may want to exchange your findings with our other UHH members

Well I just stomped the hell out of both and they look identical now. So this test is of no importance.

Image, that was a very interesting read! Thanks for the link.
Not that anybody noticed, but I went on record when the 7ll was announced that I wanted one, JUST because of the added weather sealing!
I shoot in the rain and am careful. When I read the 7ll had 4x the weather sealing, I wanted it because I was pretty confidant I could shoot openly in the rain with it.
Now I'm VERY CONFIDANT it will shoot open rain without a condom. When shooting fast action in the rain, it's necessary to have full access to all the cameras functions.
Bravo to Canon for taking that step to professionalize the 7ll. Thanks Canon

Those seals that look like thin stripes of rubber are called perimeter seals. Just to assure you that they are up to the task, that type of sealing system has been used for decades by companies like Cat, Mack, Detroit Diesel, and a whole bunch of others to seal their engines. Far more extreme conditions then a camera will ever meet. That link shows a very impressive sealing effort on the part of Canon, IMO.

When I moved from shooting transparencies with a Nikon years ago, I reevaluated both the Canon & Nikon brands of FX camera bodies and lenses for an upgrade to digital. I could not find a valid reason not to stay with Nikon, even though I really liked the Canon offerings as well. It really is a matter of preferences; both are terrific products.

For most of us, it dates back to our first and earliest cameras. Back in the late 60's and into the 70's and 80's it consisted of who could "one-up" metering, weather sealing, and providing mega buck lenses to working pros to promote the brands.

Yes, Sony is catching up. They might be up to %15 market share by now, and if you and everybody you know buys a hundred of them, maybe they can catch Nikon. Wouldn't THAT be hilarious.
And if Sony is lucky, so body will actually start wanting them.

okay, here goes. there is no such thing as the "perfect" camera. nor digital imaging device. all brands and respective models have their strong and weak points. Erv (my pseudo retired tech) has ripped apart thousands of canons and nikons for 45 years, and he can attest to the fact that both brands will stand up to rugged use and at some point in their lives (20+ years) something will go wrong, and need service.
so, please folks, don't worry about what is really a non-issue. all models are built to a price point (even my beloved hasselblads, leicas and linhofs) and will perform just a good as the other.
so, if you are inclined to either brand, pick the one you like best, with confidence.
