Hello, everyone

Once again appealing to the informed members.

I am thinking of replacing my Canon 50D with a 7D (old version)'
I know they are both cropped sensors, however, I've been told that the latter is far superior.

Worth it?

Thanks for benefitting me with your knowledge!

Cheers, Monte

The 7D is indeed a better camera then the 15mp 50D, but the 50D is not exactly a piece of junk. It was a very highly recommended camera just 4 years ago. What are you hoping to accomplish with the upgrade? In what areas is the very capable 50D no longer meeting your requirements? Do you really "need" a new camera, or do you just "want" a new camera?

Monte - they share the same DIGIC4 processor inside of different classes of bodies. Unless the 7D was "free", you're not going to see that much of a difference between a 15 and 18MP sensor. The bottom of this page has a graphical breakdown: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Canon_EOS_digital_cameras

The differences will come from changing level of camera and / or skipping a generation of processor.

I've owned both...The 7D is definitely a great upgrade from the 50 if you need what it has to offer.. It has dual processors, more focus points and options, higher ISO, more FPS. If you need those things they are there for you. If you are going to put you camera on a tripod and take a picture of a flower you won't see any difference.

Most likely, the 7D. Depends on your type of shooting and what you think your 50D may be lacking compared to the 7D. Should be some good deals available on the 7D now that the 7DII is out.

Monte,

What are you going to use the camera for?

Yeah exactly. I have both and the 7D is a much better camera for wildlife action then the 50D.
However if you mostly shoot stuff that's just sitting there like flowers, old barns and sunsets, it won't make that huge of a difference.

Worth what? An even swap no cash? Yes.

Is your 50 breaking down? Then Yes.

How much are you spending on the 7D?

My interest in photography covers a diverse range of subjects. I would say that I am primarily interested in travel photography
Whenever possible, I love visiting different cultures and photographing the people, rituals, and the environment in which they live.

When I am out hiking I love recording the beauty of nature as I see manifested all around me.

No sports, no videos.

No, there is nothing wrong with my 50D, I would just like to take advantage of a more recent technology.

I am paying around $870.00 for a brand new, USA model.

Thanks,

Monte

I have zero complaints when it comes to the 50D, but after researching and comparing the two cameras I know that I will have more advanced processors, af points and increased ISO speeds.

The latter is especially appealing to me because I love taking pictures in available lighting conditions.

Thanks,

Monte

Given the subjects you are shooting and that there is nothing wrong with the 50D, I would say a new lens might be a better investment. I don't think there is much the 7D gives you that affects your ability to shoot travel. The 7D has advantages just not ones that are going to improve your shots as much as improved lenses might. You could get the highly rated Sigma 18-35 1.8 or a really nice wide angle lens in your budget. What lenses do you currently have?

Hi.

No, I just don't shoot stuff that's just sitting there. You mentioned wildlife, I am hoping to return to Africa and continue my love affair with that country's offerings when it comes to photographing animals in their natural setting.

Thanks for your reply,

Monte

Given the subject matter you are primarily interested in shooting, and potential low light situations, I would go for a FF camera such as a 6D over a 7D.
Of course it depends on what lenses you have.
