What nerve?

Stating the truth is 'hitting a nerve'? Not mine. I give a different opinion on how and why B&W is used (as well as other gimmickry). The rest? Bah.

I am puzzled.

When shooting or converting to black and white, I believe that it takes more skill to get an outstanding black and white. You have to observe and try to capture the tonal values as that to me is what make a black white an art. Not every pic is meant to be a black and white. For me it is harder to get an outstanding black and white. Lighting is highly emphasized in black and white. In a painting I take a picture of the painting when I block in values to see how it translate to the eye. You can get the perception of depth and tonal value faster for me that way. I pick up this hint from a professional artist.

In an age where digital photography is ubiquitous, and post processing allows everyman to bump saturation levels and create hyper-real images, black and white photography seems like a curious anachronism. What do you Hogs think
Or am i reading too much :-P

Ultimately, it's about how you want to interpret a given scene. Black & white photography interprets it strictly in tones of dark and light. Color photography interprets a scene not only in tones of dark and light, but also in shades of color.

If your goal is to capture what most closely resembles what your eyes see, then shoot stereoscopic color video.

I'd say you are reading too much into it.
Agreed, use to be no other choice.
Truth is our eyes see in color. So color is an easy choice, it's familiar.
Now then, what about all the shades of shades?
Sepia, for that 19th century look?
If all 31 flavors had was Vanilla & Licorice, they would have had to call it 2 flavors.
All the Artsy-Fartsy aside, the world is a pretty colorful place.

B&W tends to cut things to the hard kernel of truth. You have to show the shapes, shades etc. to make it a good image.

If you throw in enough colors even a picture of garbage can look pretty and colorful. Show the same thing in a well done B&W and it looks like what it is, garbage. Same thing for fashions, enough pleasing colors hide poor design and fit. B&W leaves you nothing but the truth.

There are two sides of this coin, as usual.

B&W can be an art form, there is no question.

B&W is also used by incompetents who think they can hide their lack of skills using what is for them a 'gimmick'. They are fooling themselves if they believe the difference cannot be made between a B&W created with care and the garbage they want to display/promote as 'art'.

You hit the nail on the head. I take color pictures, except when I am using film. Most of my pictures are really bad. I have been told that as an artist, I would make a good plumber. But I can take one of my color shots, convert it to B&W, add a bit of blur, cut down on the brightness and contrast and create a work of art. And since all the critics in this wing of the home are former Kings, Queens or Ambassadors, I trust their judgment without question.

Me? Insult plumbers? Never!!! I know a great many brain surgeons and rocket scientists who have gone on to become successful plumbers (and, in doing so, increased their net worth considerably). Look at me.... Enough credits for an MS (or PhD) in psychology, and I became a maintenance worker (glorified plumber with ancillary skills); I still pride myself in being able to set a base on a ring in one try. Now I'm not rich, mind you, but at least I can do something that no politician will ever be qualified to do. By the way, I'll answer to "Joe," "Billy," "Pete" or anything else so long as I get paid in cash!

The basic primitive brain of mammals was tuned to shades of gray night vision. Perhaps because of this primitive beginnings we react more to those shades of gray rather than the distracting confusion of color. The 1930's Frankenstein was terrifying because we had to focus on shades of gray to pick out dangerous images... the snake, tiger etc... in this case a patched together monster like a Canon with Nikon lenses!! (No, he was the monster, Dr. Frankenstein was the creator.)

Color vision was only needed and evolved to allow use to see ripe fruit. Later females utilized it to advertise, much as they do today, that they are ripe for mating. (how dull we men are, dressing in "gray flannel suites" indicating success in business, thus attracting mates!)

I remember reading many years ago that shooting in black and white is harder to get a good picture because, unlike color with multiple levels of information to the eyes, black and white is more abstract and you can not hide poor composition.
